Fabia Vrs DSG revving to 2/2.5k before engaging 2nd gear

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has already been covered. I have done a search but not found anything that has exactly the same circumstances as this.

In traffic, whilst in normal drive mode, if I lightly feather the throttle to set off, sometimes the engine revs to 2/2.5k in first gear without moving the car more than it would at idle revs and it then suddenly engages 2nd gear. This then causes the whole car to lurch forward before almost abruptly trying to stop (feels like a big stall would in a car with a clutch pedal). Does anyone have any ideas what could be the cause of this issue?

It is still under warranty and has been to the Skoda dealers but they can not find any fault or get the car to replicate it as it is a sporadic fault. Obviously it is dangerous in slow moving traffic, if it does it at the wrong time I will end up going into the back of the car in front of me.

Many thanks in advance.

Ive had exactly the same issue. Unfortunately if it cant be replicated by dealers then 'it doesnt exist' so to speak. Have you had all updates and the service campaign done?

It will normally change gear from 1st to 2nd at around 5-7 mph,  does it.

If you have to crawl for extended periods, does putting it onto 'S' help you driving smoother below 20 mph or so?

So has your car had yet or requires the Service Campaign work on the DSG.

Mechatronic Control Unit checked, Synthetic Oil Changed to Mineral & a ECU Update.

How old a car, and how many miles done,

and how long have you had it?

It does sound like possible Clutch Pack or Mechatronic Control Issues,

but i have seen perfectly well functioning cars act this way depending on throttle position,

temperature etc.

Into 'S' and then back to 'D' to see if that helps is worth a try.

But if the car needs the DSG Service Campaign Work,

be sure the MCU is checked properly, not just with a Road Test.

Thanks for the reply. It is due a service in April and as far as I know it has had all updates and also had a gearbox oil change. I know it is difficult if I can't replicate the issue but thinking of leaving the car with the dealer and saying I don't want it back until it's fixed. Let them see if they can get it to do it.

Most of the time it changes to 2nd at about 1k revs it's just the odd time it does this revving thing. It happened today on a dual carriage way, slowed down it changed to first and then I just feathered the throttle to immediately set off again and it did the revving thing.

The car is due it's service in April, it is 22months old with 9.5k on the clock. I've had it since May 2014.

The gearbox oil has been changed and as of the end of last year it has had ECU updates. It was in the dealers yesterday and they are puzzled as to what it can be. Not sure about the 'Service Campaign work on the DSG' but I'm sure they would have mentioned it if it was an issue.

Well you are very trusting if you are sure they would mention anything.

So was that the Service Campaign that was done at the end of the year?

Is there something in the Service Book & a Sticker in the boot saying it is done?

I am not sure on the need for a Service Campaign on as car new 22 months ago and the Campaign Starting in May 2014.

Odd they were still using Synthetic Oil after World Recalls announced in November 2013 and even before.

Yep, probably too trusting of them when I know I shouldn't be :)

Mine does this, and in my experience it's down to throttle position.  You need to be decisive and progressive with it to make it hold 1st a little bit longer with before changing to 2nd. It's only trying to be as Eco as possible in D (for a vRS hah), so will shift as soon as it think's it's appropriate/you aren't asking for anything extra in terms of power or speed. 2nd is it's favoured gear for traffic or creeping.

If I'm wearing my heavy work safety boots, then it behaves like this as I'm not as precise with the throttle.  Wearing trainers and it's very rare it will- I can get a nice progressive and fluid set off (for situations when D is appropriate).

Some people will say that it shouldn't behave like this and it should be smooth all the time, but mine still works and does what I want when asked/told.

As with all things like this, if you feel it's not right and your local dealer says they can't find a problem then I'd take it to another VWG dealer for a second opinion.
