coilovers help milton keynes

Featured Replies

Hi I was wondering how easy it is to fit coilovers. My red Vrs had its engine seize so bought a newer one with less miles although I miss the red one and struggle to enjoy the new one. I want to take the coilovers off the old car and put them on new car then put the new cars standard suspension on old car. Trouble is it has to be done on the driveway. How easy a job is it and rough timescale. Will also do new droplinks and arms at same time......

anybody willing to help for beer tokens lol. Im just hoping I can start to enjoy the new car soon.

could easily be done over a weekend

There isn't anything too technical here its a very straightforward job. A handy tool i found invaluable was the hub splitter tool. VW part from tms around a tenner iirc. Possible issues will be seized nuts/bolts especially drop links. I had to cut mine off the strut in the end and bought two new ones.

So before you start i would buy two new top mounts, two new top mount bearings, and due to possible seized bolts, two new anti roll bar drop links. The passenger side is really easy for strut removal, my main issue was the drivers side. Its due to the drive shaft not letting the hub down far enough to get the stut out. I used spring compressors on that spring to allow the strut up far enough. Its easy though honestly especially the rear. Good luck.

Cheers mate ended up working tonight so will probably leave for my next week off in 2 weeks. They are expensive coilovers so would like to keep as other car has to go :-(

VW Front Shock Absorber Removal:

These should help. Thing to note though, the rear ones i removed both bottom shock bolts at the same time and held the rear beam up with my trolley jack i found that easier.

I have just done this yesterday and God knows how many mk4 platform cars Iv done it to either, as meaty101 said drop both bolts out of the shocks and drop the axel but support it, that way you can do both springs at the same time, rears are the easiest ones to do, disconnect the drop links before starting the front, you might need to jack the hub up slightly to take the pressure off the arb, instead of going out and buying this spreader tool use an Alan key instead works much better, iirc 7mm gives it just enough room to drop the hub off the strut and makes putting your new one is easy, if you arnt using a air rachet or a battery gun you will need a swan neck spanner or a Mcpherson spanner to get at your top mounts

Good luck

Oh and don't just hit the hub like the above video as it will take a lot longer to do open the hub up using the Alan key and it will pop straight out

Some good tips. I can't see how an allen key would work better than the hub tool mind. I'll take your word for it buddy but i would've thought the allen key would try and slip round as the hub squeezes onto the edges where as the proper tool has flat edges to hold it in place. If it saves a tenner though thats all good!!

are you breaking the car?  pm if you are as I need a few bits ;)
