Electronic Stability Program (ESP) light problem.

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have an early 2004 1.6 petrol Octavia and i have a problem with the ESP dashboard light if anyone can give me any pointers id be greatfull.

The problem started within the last twelve months and is intermittent.  Whats happening is the ESP light sometimes stays on after starting or sometimes it dose go out but comes on and stay on after driving for a while. This seems to happen in mostly damp / wet weather ( Being in Ireland we get a lot of it )  More recently within the last few weeks this now seems to lead to the engine management light coming on.

two things that have happened in the last 12 months that may or may not have a bearing on the issue.

(1) New battery installed, (2) leak from sunroof water drained down the pillars both front and back pooling in foot wells and boot space.

I've asked the mechanic to check it out while getting it serviced last week but he could find nothing wrong when he ran a diagnostic scan.

Can any one give me a few pointers as to what may be going on here. Is it a sensor problem or a major electronic failure.what is the best case / worst case secenario. I'm dreading the thought of having to go to a Skoda dealership as they are a total rip of here in Ireland. (€100 just to look at it ) Where are these sensors located and can I visually inspect them myself. I have the Haynes owners workshop manual but cant find anything about it in that.

Thanks.

have you changed your brakelight switch ?   i had the same problem , when  the esp light came  on the brake light would not function  so it was easy to controll . Sorry my poor spelling

Thanks for the reply, the brake lights are working fine.In Fact the car passed the NCT test this morning ( Ireland's equivilant of the MOT in the UK )  how lucky am i ?  both the ESP and The engine management light stayed on when I was driving to the test center. while stopped at a traffic light that i know is a slow to change i turned off the engine while waiting for the green light. when i turn back on the engine the ESP went out but the engine management light remained on.then just before i got to the center i pulled in and turned off the ignition again while i wasgathering my documentation together. I was stopped for a couple of minutes. when I started up again the engine management light went out. so it passed the test with no lights showing on the dash. Then while driving home the ESP light came back on and stayed on. While I feel i had a lucky escape with the NCT this is really infuriating.
