First Skoda...first car..

Featured Replies

Good day one and all.

On Thursday last week I got myself a '99 Octavia GLX estate 1.9TDi, 147k miles.

My other vehicle is a '89 VWLT28 which, on a good day will do 28mpg and 16mpg around town, I needed something a bit more frugal for commuting and so on. Originally I was looking for Octavias, Passats and Avants but when they were becoming hard to find in my price range and locale, I started eyeing up X-Types and Rover 75s.

This Octavia popped up so I plumped, and apart from stalling tens of times on the first two days, trying to start in third or going into fourth from first, I am liking it a lot.

Naturally, after checking everything was alright before buying, there are some things which are now not playing fair, but those will be appearing in the Octavia1 section soon.

I say first car, because I have not really had one for about eight years, so insurance was ridiculous, £455. I had used public transport and pedals for that period, but they are not always practicable, and using the van equally so.

I suppose I better get a manual then.
