Help in identifying a gearbox component

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hoping one of you Skoda fans can help me identify a small component screwed into the front of the gearbox casing on my 05 Octy II. I've noticed an increase in transmission noise and a clunkier gearshift recently. Took a look underneath and spotted a light oil weep from somewhere under the gearbox. Enough to have spread out and be slightly wet, but not enough to drip hence not spotting it sooner. Cleaned the area up and ran the car for a couple of days and took another look. The oil is coming from a bolt/plug at the front of the box, which looks like it's seen some action and is rather mashed up. I've tried to identify it with some online diagrams but have failed.

Please see the attached pics. Can anyone identify the part for me please?

The leak is really tiny but I suspect has been happening for a long time. The gearbox was out and stripped (knackered DMF took out main output shaft bearing so box was split and checked throughout) about five years/50k miles ago so had an oil refill then. Maybe this was when the component got mashed and not tightened up perfectly. Who knows, but my plan is replace it if possible to stop the leak and refill the box with oil.

So if anyone knows:

1) What is it/what does it do?

2) What should it look like when new? Is it Torx/hex/bolt head?

3) Pointer to a pic or part number would be great if possible

4) I have read that gearbox oil capacity is 1.9l stripped, but only 1.7l for a drain and refill. Does this sound correct?

I believe that the oil level plug is no use on this model and that the box has to be drained fully and refilled via the reverse switch hole.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!

Regards,

Lube

which gearbox / engine do you have?

Ah yes that would help! It's a 1.9 TDI PD BXC. How do I find the gearbox type?

That's BKC not BXC. Goddamn this phone's auto correct....

It's possibly a GQQ 0A4 5 speed box.

It shows that item in this guide but doesn't say what it is.  It does answer your other questions re oil change.

I think you'll find it's the reverse shaft support bolt (#10 in the diagram).  It looks like it's a consumable with a torx head.  There are two other similar bolts holding the reverse shaft support bracket so it's possible you can remove that single bolt & replace it / add sealant.
