Electric vehicle servicing?

Featured Replies

Overheard someone at a site today talking to a colleague that their leaf was in for a service.

Just curious what is serviced and how much they are considering no engine to change oil on

Maybe they need to change the electrons in the battery?

I'd assume the rest of the car still needs servicing.

Service & maintenance done properly is more than an Oil & Filter Change.

Like Brakes & Suspension and steering inspected and any work requiring doing being done.

Then,

Someone also needs to lubricate hinges, check wiper blades, look at tyres, maybe even check pressures and top up the washer bottle,

if the drivers are not doing it.

They check the washer fluid, supposedly rotate the tyres (as it gives them something to do) and check for suspension and brake wear.

This costs about £100.

The LEAF does have coolant, which is changed every two years.

£100! I was expecting £50

Do you get as much of 1 hour or part of one hours  work from a VAT Registered Qualified Business or Trades person for £50 including VAT.

How many here that have a Profession, Trade or Specialist Skill will do their service including Materials for only £50 including VAT.?

£100! I was expecting £50

I can only quote what I was told by a Nissan trained LEAF Tech, but basically if Nissan said the LEAF didn't need a service very often the dealers would have initially been even more reluctant to sell them as they'd never see the customers again...

A friend of mine worked at Nissan for a while and was there to see the introduction of the Leaf, as said above - the car still needs servicing, it still has lots of components that can fail /need maintenance or replacing.

But as you say: if it didn't need a service, there wouldn't be much need for the mechanics and many other jobs in the industry! It will be interesting to see how the role of the mechanic plays out as electric cars become more and more common. With there being a lot less to work on, how will they fair?

Do you very often see job adverts for 'Mechanics',  or Qualifications or Training Positions.?

Fitters, Technicians, Master Technicians and the various Motor Industry Work Shop jobs no longer seem to have 'Motor Vehicle Engineers / Mechanics'.

Where many Arnold Clark & other Dealership workshop employees in Scotland will gain their Qualifications.
