Please advise, Can I replace six sided hub bolt with twelve sided one?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just set up to replace a split c.v. boot on my 55 plate octavia mkii and the first thing that I noticed is that the current fitted hub bolts are six sided and the replacement bolt that t.p.s. have provided is a twelve sided one.

The stated torque and angle settings for tightning these two bolts are vastly different and looking at the haynes book the diagrams all show the six sided bolt as having a widend/collared shaft next to the head, whereas the new twelve sided bolt is threaded all the way to the head.

I take it that the two types cannot be sustituted for each other?

The postings on briskoda all mention the octavia II as having a twelve sided bolt, so if I need to order a different bolt, will it be as simple as just asking t.p.s. for a six sided one instead?

Many thanks in advance, simon.

Yes it will be fine, as when I got my boots replaced I was given a 12 sided bolt. The only difference is the torque settings are different.

Thanks Wiilydog, and was the six sided one that you removed threaded all the way to the head?

I don't know as my mechanic did it but it was definitely six sided one that came out as I had the same thought when I bought the boot kit from skoda and parts guy gave me a 12 sided bolt based on my reg no. Its probably a revised design and my vw specialist didn't have any issues with using the new bolt design.
