RNS 510 questions

Featured Replies

I recently bought an RNS 510 (version b )as I really wanted maxidot navi. As I have a pre fl mk2 octavia I had the battery drain issue to contend with. I flashed a modified 4020  firmware in the hope of solving it and all seemed well but alas woke to a flat battery this morning. I have ordered a replacement Can Gateway and want to know can I flash an OEM Skoda 4020 or above once fitted? I get the Volkswagen navigation on my dash which is a little annoying and would prefer an oem skoda firmware if possible. Thanks

Nothing to gain from going beyond 4020 so I'd stop there.

Is the part number 3T0...B or is it a 'Revision B' (which is different)?

SW 1104.

I read somewhere on the net it was revision B but didn't know why lol

Just to clarify, did you buy a Columbus or an RNS510?

A Columbus sorry are they not the same unit just badges differ. This is how little I know, someone sent me a link to rns 510 firmware so I presumed they were the same. Also the seller listed it as an rns 510. It does say Columbus on the front though.

Essentially the same unit, but the face plate is different, and the software is brand specific. RNS510 has VW branded software while Columbus has Skoda branded software. Does your unit start up with Skoda colours and splash screen, but you have VW flashing up on the dash display? If so, it sounds like you might have a software conflict. Early softwares were brand specific whereas later ones were universal.

Yes that's exactly it, on my dash it says vw navigation. Also vw specific poi's . It is green illumination though and shows the welcome skoda logo.

The POI (like VW dealers and suchlike) are part of the maps, so if you've updated those then that would explain the VW POI. The VW logo on the dash will be something to do with having flashed a VW specific software onto it I guess, but I don't know exactly what you might've done. I think I saw on another thread that you'd tried various versions? Something might've caused a conflict. The only way to sort that issue is to use Service Tool to rebrand it to Skoda, and then reinstall firmware correctly.

Thanks, is this something skoda would have to do as I am not that bothered by it. I have used the software found on rnsfirmware and only found vw versions.

I doubt Skoda will have the tools to rebrand the unit. VAG don't provide that service so it would have to be an aftermarket shop or suchlike. I also don't know what firmware various websites host and distribute, or who's had a hand in butchering them to suit their own agenda, but there are Skoda specific firmwares about which would possibly be a starting point. However, if you're happy to live with it as it is then I'd stick where you're at. I'm not a believer in throwing random firmware fixes at them to try and make them do something they're not designed to do. Bad stuff can happen as a result of failed firmware updates (or the wrong firmware, etc.)

I think I would like to go to a skoda firmware just because I'm a bit of a completionist. I'm hoping the can gateway swap will fix power drain issues so I really would like an unmodified firmware if anyone could pm me a link? Thanks again for your help
