Brake issues

Featured Replies

Just been rung by the dealer (who's had the car since before nine this am) to say the car failed its MoT because the pads were worn to 1.5mm. However, the warning light hadn't activated and I'm dubious.

They want £115 to replace the pads at the rear. They want £215 for the front as they say the discs are badly lipped and need replacing too. Is this typical?

Many thanks

I smell something here.

How many miles and how old?

Phil

Just had my front pads replaced by independent garage £70 supplied and fitted.

Funnily enough, my Octy was in for an MOT yesterday at my usual Skoda dealer, they sent me a video link showing how much my front discs had worn, and also the rest of the underside of the car (no other faults). But to be honest I can't complain because the cars covered 156K miles and only ever had one set of pads all round and no discs. I sourced genuine front discs and pads from a Skoda dealer on ebay and I'll be changing them at the weekend.

I've seen a few post on here recently of people having to replace the discs and pads due to the discs rusting away on the inside face and causing excess wear of the pads.

I have also recently had to do the same. There was plenty of material on the pads and the discs were thick enough but they had crumbled and gone rusty inside and it had worn down to the electrical connector of the wear sensor in the pad and was squeaking.

I change the disks and pads on my VRS at around 55k. I think they had a fair bit of wear left on them but they were getting untidy.

Dealers charge comedy prices for brakes. SWMBO's BMW 116 didn't even get an advisory on brakes yet the dealer recommended changing them front and back and quoted £1500 for disks and pads.

Skoda quoted me £200 to supply front disks only. I bought pagid parts from ECB and had disks and pads changed front and back for under £300 at an indy I know.

I think brakes are seen as a bit of a cash cow right now.

They really do charge a lot for brakes.

I got discs and pads for £80 for the front. Fitted them myself and took me about 2 hours in total.

56k and 8 years old. I priced it up at one of the major chains and their price was broadly similar. Had I had more warning would probably have tried some independents but the warning light hadn't worked even though the mechanics at the dealer said they were worn down to the wire. Interestingly (and worringly) they also said a rear light bulb was blown too  and that wasn't showing up on the Maxidot either.
