life of a clay a mitt

Featured Replies

How long would a typical mitt last?  The farecla g3 mitt for example.  I'm sure it depends on how filthy the car is and probably more, but can you say 'how many Octavias could I decon with one mitt?'

I ask as I noticed a big patch of the sticky rubber bit on mine has gone Matt and lost its tacky feel. I've only used it to clay the front and rear bumpers and both sides of the car, so 2/3rds of an Octavia.  I've been using warm water with plenty of car shampoo as a lube, applied with MF wash mitt on the other hand, and frequently washing/gently rubbing the surface of the mitt in the bucket too.  Car had been washed, detarred, de ironed, and wiped over with IPA before I clayed.

Have I abused my mitt, been unlucky and picked up a duffer, or is this typical?  I'd expected to clay the whole car several times with one mitt but might be lucky to get '2 Octavias' from it.

Yes..depends on the amount of contamination it has to deal with and how many times its been used

I decided to get another after I had done 4 large cars of varying comtamination, but it still looks ok, but maybe not as effective

There was a three for two offer on recently at Halfords

I've clayed my Fabia twice now and mine still seams to be in perfect condition, still sticks to things and nothing seams to have come off. How are you washing it? Are you putting it in the washing machine? I put mine in the washer with the rest of my MF towels and it works, maybe you're washing it too ht and it's melting it a bit.

No I just have it a dip in the soapy bucket, gave it a rub, rolled it up, wrung the worst of the water out and stood it over a bottle to dry.  Maybe it needs a better wash?

It's not falling apart, just some of the rubber bit has gone Matt and lost its super tacky feel.

Unless the soap is still resting on it and slowly eating it away?

Hungry soap?

I'll try giving it a better wash and rinse.

I think they are most effective on the first 4 cars (contamination depending) after this they seem to marr more, but if I am doing a full paint correction this doesn't matter so a mitt can be used a bit more on those jobs. :)
