Picked it up

Featured Replies

Not the best of days for picking up a new car, but oh well.

Not having seen a Petrol Blue before there was excitement and trepidation. But I needn’t have worried, I like it. And the more I look at it the more I like it.

Driving home in an unfamiliar car straight into city traffic (Coventry) and rain isn’t something to look forward to, (though I did have a brief test drive a couple of weeks ago and I am used to VW/Audi), but as you know the Yeti is easy to drive and I felt at home straight away.

I like the nature of the diesel and its slight thrum into the cabin (the more powerful 4x4 I drove seemed smoother and more refined) and was a reason for choosing it over the petrol, as well as it’s more relaxing, easy going nature. I think that a diesel fits better with a car like the Yeti - just my opinion of course!

Once out of Coventry and onto the bypass I found going into fifth (top) was a bit awkward and at odds with the other gear changes, but I will get used to it. And whilst on negatives (minor ones) when changing into first or third my hand would hit the switches and the wipers judder, though this should improve with use.

Obviously the 110PS is no rocket ship but it is ideal for the purpose I bought the car for. Checking the consumption I was pleasantly surprised to see that the average was already 48mpg having covered 20 miles of city and three lane carriageway.

Only played with the sat nav/media unit briefly but glad I went for that.

We’re going away for a couple of days next week, up near Shrewsbury, so that will give it a good run and a good test.

But initial impressions are that I love this car and I’m sure it will fit the bill perfectly for our requirements.

Which cars are actually 5 or 6 speed? - looking at the old brochure it shows 5 speeds and 6 speeds on 110ps FWD and 6 speeds on 4X4.  What is correct?

I asked this on another thread as the brochure wording isn't very clear. I think all 4x4's are 6 speed, the 2wd TSI 110 is 6 speed and the 2wd 2.0 TDi is 5 speed. But I could be wrong.....

I Think they are all 10 speed.

Many used to say that 5 gears are more than enough but I reckon on the 2.0 TDI 110PS it could do with 6 really. Top (fifth) is very high and obviously intended for good mpg at high cruising speeds but at less than 60 mph you really need to change down to fourth to have any sort of acceleration. 5 would be OK if top was lower and the gears were spaced closer together.

But for my main use of commuting 20 miles each way to work and general running around I can live with it.

I remember clouting the heater controls when changing gear when I first had TIBET I - it didn't take long for the 'problem' to go away, something in the subconscious happened!

Enjoy the Yeti.
