Our lad had is VW Golf 1.6tdi cambelt+water pump done at a main VW cost £410 inc vat and a courtesy car for the day

That is good, VW have some pretty good 'fixed price' offers on.

Skoda charge £359 for a cambelt but charge £100 for the water pump on top so £410 for both from a VW dealer seems quite fair!
