Brakes Advice!

Featured Replies

Afternoon all!

I need advice on replacement discs and pads for my Vrs estate.

I just want a decent set, nothing too flash as its most certainly not a race car, but there's so many options on size and thickness etc

I read that the way to usually tell what size I need is on the printout in the footwell, which is pretty much rubbed out, is there any other way of telling?

It's a 61 plate mk2 and it has the red calipers (sure I read somewhere that that's a sign of size required, I could be lying though, it has been known)

I've been quoted £230 parts only from TPS, £300 approx all in by a local and £360 from Volkswerk in Middlesbrough.

All of which seem a bit steep unless someone wants to correct me...

Cheers! :)

Try euro parts they have some good deals going. Pagid mintex etc, should be looking around £150.00 for parts.

Dont forget rears wind in with brake tool.

Any ideas on how I decipher which size is mine?

Put your registration number in the Eurocarparts website and it will tell you the size or just call them. Pagid are always good discs and reasonable priced, a lot less than quoted. Mintex also good and a bit cheaper.

Tried that and for the front discs there's 2 differing sizes, 280mm that fit 1zf and 1zm and 288mm which fit 1ze. Same goes for rears

Meyle discs are really good but not very popular here but in Germany they have a loyal following with BMW and VAG

Mines a Mk1 Octavia vrs, and can vouch for Pagid, not heard of Meyle stuff sorry. I`ve got Pagid discs and pads on the front of mine for the last 2 years, and they`re superb, and barely look worn! so much so, I`ve now got a set for the back to install very soon ;)

If it helps, Skoda do pads and discs for the VRs £249 supplied and fitted for front, and the same for the rear!

I think they come with a 2 year warranty, I haven't got access to my paperwork at the moment, so can't confirm.

ECP were a load help like, advised me that I needed either 280, 288 or 312 which I already blummin knew!

Problem solved, a nice chap from škoda gave me the codes over the phone haha

I got Pagid from ECP using a site discount code. Found them just as good as OEM.

I think I managed to do front and back fitted for around £300, got an indy to do them.

Skoda dealer quoted me over £200 just to supply disks.

For comparison, new brakes and discs (front and rear) for my standard Octavia estate cost £430 fully fitted at Pulmans of Durham.

I've just replaced my front discs and pads, I went with MTEC discs and mintex pads direct from the MTEC website after reading some good reviews on this forum. So far they are performing really well and give good progressive performance. They were really good value as well; after various discount they worked out at about £115 for the discs and pads (plus you get a free bottle of brake fluid), they were cheaper than getting the standard set up from Euro car parts.

Front discs are here:

I went for dimpled and grooved, I like the way they look but not sure that it actually offers too much of a performance gain TBH. I also opted for the black anti corrosion coating to stop the hubs rusting....looks good but it did make a right old noise for the first few miles until the coating wore off the disc surface!
