Had my air con regassed today

Featured Replies

Had my aircon regassed today. Some might think "so what" but there is no way that I was going to Kwik Fit or somewhere like that. As I am in the meat trade we have a fridge engineer on call on a regular basis. As a car air con is just a refrigeration unit if he can regas a fridge unit he can sort my air con out. When I asked him he said "of course I do it all the time". Lifted the bonnet found the compressor,  attatched some pipes, stuck a temperature probe in the air vent, started the air con and the temperature was 26c, not cold at all. After he checked the pressure he whacked in some gas, opened and shut some valves while checking some readings on 2 dials and the air vent dropped to 8c  . As he said if it has a small leak and this lasts for the rest of the year £20 is a small price once or twice a year. I was well pleased.

£20 once or twice a year might be a small price but is not very environmentally responsible.

He should be refusing to regas a system with a leak (legally).

You really need to find and fix the leak.

The machine Kwik Fit and other garages use is idiot proof, it removes all the gas, removes any contaminants, carries out a vacuum test of the cars air con system to check for leaks. If leak test passed it refills the system with the correct weight of gas with the correct amount of oil as well. Your so called refrigeration engineer would only use pressure gauges, and as said above it is illegal to refill a leaking system.

Considering a regas is only £29.99 is it worth it? I got a deal through Groupon.

If this was me, I'd be deleting my thread!
