Previously on my octavia vrs i was averaging around 35-40mpg, recently i have noticed a steady drop and I have not been flooring the throttle what so ever. At the moment im doing 25mpg, this cant be right surely?

Has anyone had similar problems, as im planning on taking to have a look at it.

Especially with wheels that you describe as 50p shaped. Maybe some better tyres would help?

Day tripper, have you done any mods lately? Such as an induction kit? Driven in more traffic?

mine was very economical for first 3k

then fell away badly.. but has got better again guess is a "loosing up" thing.. or could have been "driving like a ****" thing

day tripper, are you keeping detailed records of total fuel used against mileage? In other words do you know the overall mpg since the car was new and the mpg achieved between tank fills?

i dont keep records no, but i tend to reset it computer quote often to see my average.

I reset it today, drove about 18 miles, 5 of which on the motorway at 70 and 40 on roads in 4th or 5th most of the time, accelerating softly to the soundtrack of Jimi hendrix, no mods either. Average is showing at 35mpg now. Im out ina bit and will check it again. Ive noticed at the traffic lights it gradually decreases. IS this due to burning up fuel over zero distance as a result the average will fall naturally?

You might want to try finding someone with the VAG.COM software and have them re-calibrate the throttle to servo. Makes a difference, I've had it done twice now and although subtle it keeps the MPG level.

18 months and 43,000 later and it still does 34 sat at 85 and 40 at 70, thus speed does cost.

Will the dealer do this throttle calibration under warranty? My Octy [purchased today, 2002 with 32500miles ] is showing no higher than 22.1mpg around my neighbourhood/town, although during test drives of newer showroom models I saw 35 and 44mpg at times. Is this normal and will my consumption be extend/go down over extended driving (i.e. motorways etc)?

Yes, that's it - just like if you dip the clutch at 70 the instantaneous will shoot up to an infinite value and make the average increase steeply.

It's well worth remembering that the throttle is quite sensitive - stick it on the instaneous value as this will show you how much fuel is being used in relation to the use of the accelerator pedal. Then drive accordingly. Wouldn't say 35mpg was all that bad though for 70/40 combined driving though!

Your test was only over 18 miles which is not much, especially as only 5 of which were on the M-way. 35mpg sounds alright as to get ot over 40 takes a good few miles on the motorway in my expereince.

Rob is right about the instantaneous value and the throttle being very sensitive. Watch it when going up gradients on the motorway too, makes more of a difference than you'd think:drive1:
