Best technique for cutting out old exhaust?

Featured Replies

Whilst fitting my exhaust I'll need to cut through the old one (still on the original factory exhaust). I'm tempted to take the thing to kwik fit and ask them if they'll fit an exhaust that I supply.

But in case I'm feeling brave - I assume an angle grinder is the best way to cut through the old one?

If it was me doing it I'd use a hacksaw if you can get it in properly...the grinder would be too risky for sparks near the petrol tank vent and if you accidently slip with the grinder the disc may catch a brake pipe .

I used a hacksaw in my Corsa 1.2 exhaust and that was hard work while wedged under the car.

I guess you're talking about removing the dp/cat section?

Can be removed in a single piece..if you have a set of ramps of a couple of trolley jacks. You may also be able to remove by removing the bracing which is just before the cat...I think.

Nope. The standard CAT/DP will remain in place.

That's what I'd do mate!

Probally take them 30min to strip the old out & replace with yours. They'll be working at a user friendly height remember.

I you have a go yourself, make sure you've got the First Aid box nearby.

I have a first aid box on the wall in the garage ;) I'd suggest everyone has one in there, along with an extinguisher.

In my experience, any of the big exhaust chains won't fit anything that you supply (even cash in hand). Best to try a smaller style independent :D Cos me

Hmmm.... I wonder if my friendly MOT tester would be able to arrange something for me ?

I'll drop him a PM ;)

Phil..... you got my text.....we use a chain cutter to make a nice neat cut just in case you need to refit the exhaust. Thats how i cut my old one (your new one) off  Boss man a bit OTT with the price i think but ramp time costs money in our place, could maybe do it one Sunday but SWMBO now likes to go shopping as its my only day off :(

Could always PM BAZVRS as he`s my assistant manager and may do it for you on a Sunday, he has just signed up to the site as he now wants an Octy

;) Phil

My favoured weapon is my trusty air hacksaw. Makes a nice clean cut so can be sleeved if refitted.

I'll pay a visit to our local tool hire firm and see if i can hire an air saw!

I think its going to be a little cold this weekend to be lying under the car touching cold metal things! The exhaust can wait until next weekend I think.

I can just picture the scene, fire brigade lying next to you under the car unsticking your frozen hands friom around the old pipe with a milk bottle full of hot water :)

Right. I can confirm that by far the easiest weapon for removing the exhaust is an angle grinder.

It made swift work of cutting out the old one.

was going to suggest you stuck to the angle grinder if you did it yourself... used one on the old renault exhaust that was on the 19...

must admit though i did get worried when the sparks started flying...

I wanted my missus to take a photo of the sparks as I was anticipating it looking good. Sadly she ran a mile when I began cutting.

My top tip is to use a BIG angle grinder not one of those little ones. That way you can rest the end of the grinder on the ground and use all your effort to get the cut right.
