Smear on windscreen of Yeti

Featured Replies

I have a smear in the shape of an arc scribed by the windscreen wiper which is directly in my line of sight. I have applied various agents in an attempt to clear the smear but so far without success. The smear appears to be ingrained in the exterior surface of the glass . Can anyone suggest any methods for eradicating this smear.

Try rubbing some vinegar into it on a bit of kitchen roll.

Hi Geoff, welcome to Briskoda, hope you enjoy your Yeti.

Re the smear, I recall something similar with my first Skoda, a Mk1 Fabia, I think someone had applied one of those rain-shedding coatings (Rainex??), and it was breaking down, or was sticking to the wiper rubber, or who knows what!

I asked around, got referred to Halfords product called Intensive Glass Cutter, 250ml bottle in blue box, with special application cloth, try www.halfords.com and item code 798736. This was c 4yrs ago, it's still in my "car stuff" cupboard in the kitchen! I recall it seemed to do the trick.

Box says product contains micro abrasives that thoroughly clean glass surfaces. "The abrasives have been carefully selected to clean glass effectively without scratching."

And are the wiper blades in tip-top condition, or is a section of the lip breaking away and creating the smear? Have you run a flannel laden with neat wash-up liquid along the blade lips to thoroughly clean them of traffic gunge and grit?   Can make quite a difference!

And is your screenwash mix strong enough? Try a concentrated one, on an old flannel or sponge, directly to the glass AND to the blade lips.

If you've just acquired the car, was it via dealer, have they overdone the polish or some other valeting product?? Or get them to replace wiper blades if under warranty?!

Hope some of that helps.

Richard

For cleaning the glass I usually use Autoglym fast glass.

But for more stubborn marks I use.

Yes, for anything that Autoglym Fast Glass won't shift.  Wipe the blades, too.  Then wash off with clean water.  Be careful not to be too generous as vinegar removes wax from paintwork, too...

Another thing to try (if you don't want to fork out for any of the products above) and if you have some in the kitchen cupboard is Brasso. Excellent for getting very light scratches off glass and Perspex.

Try very fine wire wool. Its cheap as chips and won't scratch the glass. Saw it on one of those youtube videos. Used it myself
