My Disaster

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

I don't know how many of you will be interested in my tale of woe with my brand new Octy 2.0TDi DSG.

After 3 1/2 days the DSG 'box failed - oops. The problem manifested as a gear grating noise when the 'box was preselecting 4th and occasionally 6th.

The dealer has been great and they actually swapped the car (after much waiting) and did provide a courtesy car during the wait.

My replacement (Graphite Grey - not the original Sahara Beige) has the 17" Alloys and the Sports Suspension (which I didn't specify and the dealer threw in at no extra cost). Has anyone got a noise issue with this tyre and suspension combination???? as mine seems to have a real resonance form the tyres on most road surfaces. If the road is "billiard green" smooth it is as quiet as a lamb - but how often are the roads really smooth (well not in Yorkshire they're not).

I would love to hear from anyone else who thinks this is a problem (the dealer say's it's normal).

Hi welcome to the forum. All you can really do is check the simple things like tyre pressure and if they're directional tyres check they're on the right way. Other than that all you can do is wait until they need changing and go for a quieter tyre.

Hi EddyH

Thanks for that. The tyre pressure was the first thing to be checked. The tyres are the Bridgestone 225/45 17 which were factory fitted - They do have an asymetrical tread pattern but how likely is it the factory fitted them the wrong way round?? I will have to go and have a look on my morning break - you have got me concerned.

It happens sometimes and as it's only a matter of seconds to check it's worth doing.

Don't mean to highjack the thread, but could you possibly tell me the recommended pressure for the 225/35 17 tyres on the Octy?

It will depend on the model check under your fuel filler flap.

Tyre pressures are the same regardless of tyre manufacturer. The pressures are given on a label inside the fuel flap.

EDIT: Must type faster.

Now I feel stupid :o

Cheers people

Hi Again EddyH

You will be pleased to know that the tyres are all fitted the right way round - the direction of rotation arrows are correct.

The brand is Bridgestone Protenza 225/45 R17.

If no-one else has a noise problem with this tyre then what else could you suggest?? Is there a Sound Deadening Kit or something I could fit to my New Octy to reduce the noise??

Cheers

Potenza are a 'sporty' tyre designed for grip (I had them on my CTR), a change of tyre would probably make a big difference but will cost you ITRO £400.

Cheapest solution is turn the stereo up.

Welcome to Briskoda. :D The original Dunlops on my Octavia 4X4 are very noisy on some road surfaces. I will change to a different make for that reason when they are due for replacement.

Don't worry there's nothing wrong it's just characteristic of the Bridgstones. I have them too. Quite a lot of road noise as you say but I have got used to it to be honest and once up to speed it's no big deal. Eventually you won't even notice it.

The road noise has eased substantially now that I have 1,300 miles on mine. That's right i've only done 1,300 miles in over 2 months. It's a crime isn't it. That's what kids and work do for you. At this rate i'll be lucky to to do 8000 miles in the 1st year.

Nice motor by the way. Welcome to the forum.
