New year, New Project...

 

Well I sold my Edition 30 in October 2015, Plans where to do my Motorbike test in the New Year and had my eyes on a Honda CBR600F. I bought myself a little Suzuki Ignis Sport as a daily driver and less than a Month later had a total change of heart and decided against getting a Motorbike and that getting a Second car as a toy to use at weekends would be a good idea.

 

So I bought a really tidy MK4 Arden Blue Vauxhall Astra GSI Turbo which was EDS Stage 3 270BHP and set up a separate Insurance policy, I then had 2 cars which I hoped would tick all the right boxes.....A cheap little daily driver the Suzuki and an Impractical Stripped out project car with the Astra GSI. I had big plans for GSI, Saab 2.3 Engine transplant, Full Suspension rebuild etc etc

 

It was OK for a while but found I never really had the time to drive the GSI and when I did I was not really enjoying it as I was only going too and from work and just getting it out of the garage for the sake of it.

 

I then did some number crunching and worked out to get the Astra to the spec I wanted would mean pumping £5k in parts into it and having a total of £8k tied up in a £3k car, This would be dead money which I would never see any return on and not really a good investment at all.

 

I also thought about the end product and IF after all the money and time the car would actually do what I wanted it to? Probably not. Then we needed to spend some money on replacement windows for the house so I put the GSI on ebay and sold it just before Xmas and put the cash into the house.

 

Fast forward a Month and I have the previous owner of my Suzuki Ignis Sport chewing my ear off wanting to buy it back from me. I then start thinking about selling it and just going back to One car that does everything, That is quick enough, That I can use daily, New-ish, Will hold its money and find myself looking at Edition 30's again 

 

Having owned 2 x Red Edition 30's before I knew that unless I bought a DSG or a Stage 2+ car that it would all seem a little too familiar within a week or so and decided it would not be a good idea.

 

I considered an Audi S3 and was looking at the 2009-2012 models, Found the interiors a bit bland and dare I say it a bit dated. I only really liked the look of the Sprint Blue Sportback models but without the Panoramic Roof. Prices are all over the place on these and there seems to be very few well looked after examples.

 

So I began dreaming and looked into the MK6 Golf R...

 

Always thought that the MK6 Golf R was pretty much perfection out of the box, A 4wd Turbocharged Hatchback with styling which for me is bloody gorgeous but they have always been way out of my price range. I liked the MK5 R32 but I am not a fan of N/A V6's and always felt them lacking in performance which is why I went down the Edition 30 route twice.

 

I trawled the usual places....Autotrader, Pistonheads, Ebay etc. Seems to be quite a rare car and not that many on the market which makes sense because I have rarely seen a MK6 Golf R on the road. They are holding their money very well indeed but to my pleasant surprise have come down a little over the last 12-18 months and where within my budget too. Seen loads of MK7 R's knocking about on the roads but I bet 90% of those are on Lease and not actually owned.

 

Anyway as always with me I like to try and get the best example I can and I spotted a car which looked to tick all the right boxes and was the Spec I decided that I wanted if I was going to buy a MK6 Golf R.

 

The car was at a JCT600 VW Main Dealership and the pics where not so great so I gave them a call and spent a good 20 Mins asking various questions about the car and Service Records, The Salesman was excellent throughout and very helpful! He even went outside with a camera on a live feed and went around the car showing me any areas I requested to see. So I decided to arrange a viewing and today had a drive up as I wanted to deal with the same Salesman.

 

The presentation of the car was excellent, I was left to my own devices for a good 20 mins with the car outside the Dealership and I went through it all with a fine toothcomb. It was valeted inside and out to a very high standard, Bodywork wise it was excellent, No car park dents, Scuffs or scratches, Still like brand new inside, Alloys all in excellent un-marked condition with Premium tyres all round.

 

Happy with that I had a 10 Mile test drive, Very impressed with the car. Every bit as good as I expected! Comfortable, Quick, Smooth, 4WD was awesome!

 

We got back and it was just down to the numbers...

 

About an hour of haggling but I got the deal that I was happy with, I busted their balls big time and they actually made a loss on the car but wanted the sale which was good news for me! 

 

They had reduced the car by £1500 from their original forecourt price, Das WeltAuto 2 year Warranty, 12 Months Roadside Breakdown cover, Inspection Service/Oil Change, 12 Months MOT. At my request they are also doing the Timing Belt and Water Pump, Brake Fluid Change, Full Geometry/Alignment check and adjust, 2 x New 225/40R18 Pirelli P-Zero's to match the rear's which are brand new.

 

The front Bridgestone tyres where perished on the outer edges, Splitting between some of the tread and had Irregular wear on the inner edges. Hence why I haggled with them about the Geometry check and some new Pirelli's.

 

So I bought it!

 

Pick it up later this week after the work has been carried out, Looking forward to collecting it and getting stuck into Detailing the car and having it parked on the drive!

 

I will post the full spec and details of the car once I have it home.

Cheers Rob, Yes it was a good deal. I had been watching the car on their website and had seen it up at full price before they reduced it by £500 and then a few weeks after by another £1000! They openly told me that with the new 16 Plate Registrations coming out soon they had reduced it to sell. The price it was up at was a bargain and I would have paid that on a Private sale never mind from a main VW Dealership.

 

The Timing Belt, Water pump and Brake Fluid they had to do anyway as both of these are due for doing according to the Manufacturers Service intervals. If they had not done this then affectively the 2 Year Warranty is Void before they even sell the car. I did not haggle on the cars price but the sale nearly didn't happen as there was no money left in the car price they where reluctant to carry out the 4 Wheel Geometry check and replace to 2 x Front tyres but when they realised I was prepared to walk away they agreed.

 

A Year is my target with this one   My other half will kill me otherwise LOL!

I have been a member on here since 2007, I have owned 2 x Fabia VRS's one of which I sold to forum member on here, The other I owned last year and had a build thread on.

 

I also like to buy various other brands of car, I enjoy this forum and the people on it so even though I do not currently own a Skoda I still like to share whatever car I currently own with people on here who have an appreciation for other brands other than just Skoda.

Not really sure what my plans are as yet, It is doubtful I will be going down the tuning route with the car though.

And I finally have the car in my possession!

 

Popped up this morning to pick her up, Had a top drive back from the Dealers Via Huddersfield & Holmfirth. No time to stop and take pics En-Route as I am working a late shift today so had to be back home.

 

Fabulous Service from JCT600 VW in Bradford, Really have looked after me and I got an awesome deal from them on the car so happy days!

 

As per my request and the deal I haggled for they have shown me the invoices for the 2 x Pirelli P-Zero Tyres, Full Geometry check (Required a Minor Adjustment), Timing Belt & Water Pump, Brake fluid Change, Inspection Service, MOT, New number plates etc

 

I even got the Dealership printout of all the work the car has ever had through the network.

 

In total the Service Department charged Sales internally £1100 for all the work doing, Plus there was the additional £1500 reduction on the forecourt price! Good deal? I think so!

 

So, Full spec on the car as it stands, Car is a decent spec with some good Optional Extra's. It has everything apart from Reverse Camera, Sunroof, 19" Alloys and ofcourse DSG...

Mechanically, The usual TFSI Revised parts such as the Rev G Diverter, Latest PCV and Latest Cam Follower, Possibly do all the other Filters including the Fuel Filter using Genuine Parts. Some NGK BKR7EIX Iridium Plugs.

 

Cosmetically, Give the car a Full Detail including a 1 or 2 Stage Machine Polish/Paint Correction.

 

No plans to modify the car, I know its early days but the main reason I went for the R was to have a car that was excellent out of the box. Also with the 2 Year Dealer Warranty and the fact I have saved a long time to buy this car it will be getting pampered!

Lovely car you have there! I haven't actually seen one of these in the flesh yet like you said they are pretty rare. I have the mk6 reverse camera fitted to my mk5 r32. I love it, if you wanted it retro fitted I know a website you can buy the kit from which Eddie recommended to me. I got Eddie to fit it as well.

Any future plans for the car in terms of performance?

No plans in terms of performance as yet, The main reason I went for the R was to have a car that was excellent out of the box and didn't require loads of money spending on improvements.

 

I know how tunable these engines are and so the temptation is always there but once I went to Stage 1 it will also require an Uprated Clutch and new DMF! So you are looking at a good £1300-1400 for the Stage One Remap and replacement Clutch just for a 30BHP increase, Of-course once the Clutch has been Uprated then you could go to Stage 2 or even 2+.

 

Also with the 2 Year Dealer Warranty I wouldn't want to be in a position where the car required a repair which would normally be covered under Warranty but I had invalidated it by modifying the car.

 

Its a tough one really, When I was looking at the current market there where various examples for sale privately and that where already modified. These would have come with no warranty and so I could have done what I pleased with them. In the end though I opted to buy a Mint Condition and totally standard car from a Main VW Dealership.

 

My ideal "subtle spec" would be my car with the following upgrades...

 

Uprated Helix or Sachs Clutch with new DMF

Stage 2 R-Tech Custom mapped circa 330BHP

Full Milltek or BCS 3" Exhaust System

EVOMS Intake

Volkswagen Racing Alloys 18" in Satin Graphite Grey

Volkswagen Racing Springs 5-10mm drop on the R, Subtle and are a slightly stiffer spring but I could retain the standard adjustable dampers (ACC)

Volkswagen Racing Anti Roll Bars Front and Rear

 

That would make a nice Fast Road car without going balls out for big power, Still plenty in reserve and the standard Brakes, Intercooler etc would be up to the job.

The Talladega's had to come off. To hard a ride and wheels constantly have crack issues.

Its currently on 18's with a 25mm drop and a set of 4 pots sat behind the wheels. Running 330hp. To be honest it hardly gets used

I am now off work for 2 days so have lots of free time to lavish on the Golf which I have been really looking forward to!

 

With my 2 x Previous Golf Edition 30's and the same goes for this Golf the very first thing I like to do when I get the car is replace the known TFSI weak parts that are often overlooked as a Service item but that if fail can cause major problems such as the Camshaft follower etc.

 

The car has been Main Dealer Serviced on the dot throughout its life and had an Inspection/Lube Service 150 Miles ago, According to the Service intervals the Spark plugs and other Filters officially are not due until the cars next Service which is a Year away but since I have a bit of an OCD it bugs me about all the other Filters & Plugs so I am doing the lot just for my own benefit LOL.

 

Popped into my local TPS on my way home from work and tomorrow I will be replacing the following...

: Genuine Fuel Filter correct 6.6 Bar version, P/N 1K0201051K
