Dis dat gearbox fix thingy

Featured Replies

My others halfs just been out abusing my car and said it wouldn't go into reverse. It's fine for me as I'm used to it but guess it's not perfect.

(Think it might actually be my throttle pedal sticking as the revs stay higher unless you pull the pedal up sometimes)

And secondly it's possibly clutch related because it's silky smooth when the engine is off.

Anywho, seen a few people play about with the gearbox shim. I've never done it before or even looked at it, so fancy having ago at checking mine.

What's the part numbers?

This this the right stuff?

Looks like it. Might be worth seeing if you have excess play first. Should only be a mill or two. If it's too loose or tight then it obviously bad.

To check for play, don't I need to remove the cap?

Doesn't that damage it so worth buying them both anyway?

Yeah the cap will be damaged on removal

I'll get them bought then, want to check it more than anything. Probably should try adjusting the gear linkages first but that's boring... Playing with the gearbox sounds fun.

Just install it anyway for all the hassle it is. Provided you have a decent set of circlip pliers you should be fine. the cap gets damaged during removal and make sure when refitting the new one you dont knock the centre of it in (as it bows in...someone did that on mine so i had to remove it and metalbash it near straight again). you literally remove the cover, remove the circlip, add the washer, refit the cirlip, refit the cap...done.

If there turns out to be no play the shim will not fit.

From what I've read almost all of them should fit in ok, I think it's rare to find no play at all.

I'm thinking after 100,000 miles I should have enough wear.

Sadly I don't think this is my fault just doing it for the sake of it, quite curious to see.

I don't get any noise, any clutch creep or things like that, just first thing first and second gear feels notchy.

If I change gear first to second very slowly I can feel the teeth of the gears grinding through the gear stick, almost like the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

Just had the problem coming off my drive, felt stiff going into 1st gear.

i just left the usual amount of force on the gear stick and switched the engine off, it fell straight into gear.

So this might fix my issue if its very slight clutch creep, other than that i'll have to live with it untill i replace the clutch and flywheel :)
