Looking to become a Skodowner...

Featured Replies

Hi folks, nice site you've got here...

Looking to buy an Octavia vRS estate - as my first child arrived recently, and my BMW saloon is not quite big enough as a family wagon.

Would appreciate comments on general reliability of the vRS, as well as buying advice, what to look for etc. Particularly interested in what sort of mileage the turbo can bear without becoming a liability.

(BTW, I'm looking at the previous model - understand there has been a facelifted 2.0T version launched recently, but my funds won't stretch that far)

Thanks,

HF :)

Hello :wavey:

Longevity is pretty good, my turbo was on the way out at 138k miles - mind it had been running a remap for 130k of those miles :D

General reliabilty, pretty good on the whole.

Welcome to Briskoda. Reliability is good and the 1.8T engine in its various forms is very strong. :D

Welcome - reliability is very good, just the usual requirements of proper maintenance.

The 1.8T Engine has been around for many years and has had plenty of work done to sort any little faults -- you could quite easily see 150,000 miles with no worries.

Sounds great so far, thanks folks. Just gotta find one now...

Re the running of it......

Had mine for 32 months, did 138k miles in it.

Fuel economy; motorways cuising at 80-85 indicated, I'd get about 38mpg, A roads about 35, brisk driving on A roads about 30-32, trackdays about 12 and the Ring about 8-10 mpg.

Servicing costs: You can either go variable servicing or fixed 10k servicing. I went 10k due to my mileage and needing to know when it would need a service. Costs were:

10k = £58

20k = £148

30k = £58

40k = £200

50k = £347 - I had a new clutch fitted as a precaution

60k = £372 - Had cambelt done, again a precaution as I reckon the recomended 120k interval for it is way too long

70k = £65

80k = £220

90k = £78

100k = £189

110k = £68

120k = £550 - had cambelt and clutch changed again

130k = £93

My car had a very hard life! Of the 138k on the clock when I sold it at 32 month old, nearly 12k were track miles

So, other than services listed above, what did I break?

2 x NSF wheel bearings

1 x NSF wishbone bush

1 x main cooling fan (led to overheating problems at the Ring as it had packed up)

1 x OSF wheel bearing

1 x engine @ 135k miles. The MAF had degraded, much like Scoob ones have been known to do

Tyres, even with track use lasted about 15 - 20k for a set. Insurance was about £500 per year, all mods declared, fully comp.

Did I like mine and would I recommend it? Yep So much so, I bought another Octavia (diesel this time due to my silly mileage ).

Oh, almost forgot, depreciation. Bought new for £14,100. Sold at 32 months with 138k on the clock and paintwork that looked like it had been blasted by a shotgun, for £6,500.

Yes indeed, thanks Tavia !

Welcome to Briskoda Hans. See that you are in Hampshire so if you see a Silver VRS Estate bombing around it could well be me (I live near Waterlooville). Could offer you a test drive if you like, once tried you will want one even more and then it's down that slippery slope to modding a few things, this site does things like that to you!!.

Very kind of you, might well take you up on that :)

You might even want a go in my modded-to-220-ish-bhp saloon too ;)

An update, as I'm almost there now !

Have put a deposit down on an old-shape vRS estate this week, very excited about picking it up on 1st March. Test drive was a great deal of fun, car felt very solid, and looked fantastic.

Already lurking on various other parts of this forum and enjoying it immensely :)

Funny how I keep bumping into members of the Ford Focus Owners' Club though...FFOCers are all over the place !

Good choice, see that you decided to get the estate - what colour and which dealer did you get it from as I've sold mine so you could be getting mine!:eek:

Was always going to be the estate as I needed a load-lugger :)

Mine came from an independent trader down near Gatwick - they told me they'd bought stock from a Skoda dealer in the area, but I can't verify that.

Apart from the fact that mine's Black Magic, it certainly didn't feel anything more than a standard engine. I know what 220bhp feels like ;)

As you're local I'm sure we'll cross paths eventually !
