droning sound from front driver side wheel area

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a quick question for you all. I have a droning sound and slight vibration coming from the front driver side wheel area of my 07 plate Octavia 4x4 estate, it tends to be noticeable at any speed above roughly 30 mph.

The noise and vibration increase when i turn the wheel to the left ever so slightly and also when i go over dips in the road.

I initially thought it was the driver side front wheel bearing so i took it into the garage and it was well and truly shot, therefore it was changed.

After that the bearing noise disappeared but the droning became more noticeable, I've had the car up on jacks and manually wiggled the wheel but there is no play at all.

Anyone got any ideas as to the cause?

many thanks.

Is it definitely coming from the front? Was the car fully aligned and tracked after it was done?

yes definitely coming from the front!

Good question about the alignment, when i changed the rear tyres there did seem to be a slight bit of uneven wear towards the inboard edge of the surface. I'll have to double check on that one. thanks.

The tracking seems good, although i couldn't guarantee that is was done post bearing change.

Could be the other side wheel bearing is shot as well.

I found the dunlop sp sports fitted as oe to my sons octavia started to drone terribly near the end of their life even though no abnormal wear pattern was obvious.

Swap the wheel with the back one and see if the drone goes from front to back. If so you need a new tyre.
