Wheels - what should i do?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

on my 1.2 fabia I have arrowspeed tyres on the original 15 inch alloys,

I have been given a full set of the 17 inch tyres with brand new mud and snow tyres on, absolutely free

The only thing i do not want to do with the wheels is sell them, as they were a gift.

So should i put the 17s on the car now and not really be bothered about the winter tyres?

I drive down country roads which are pretty mudded up,

any ideas?

Yes you might as well try them on and see how the ride is.

Running the winter tyres all year is OK, you are not going to wear them out.

Cold weather is not over anyway, it might be BST but it is still spring weather,

cold nights forecast and still snow to come.

Winter tyres are usually good in the wet.

That's what i thought to be honest,

Is there anything i need to watch for/ do when i change the wheels over?

Also, any idea where to get skoda centre caps for them from?

You will need to get them balanced if they aren't already.

What size are they? Are they a Skoda approved size, you may need to inform your insurance company.

how much is balancing and they are 17s

Not sure about balancing, it's fairly cheap. Last time I got mine done I think it was £5 a corner.

Do you know the exact size? Without looking I think the 17s on the monte are 205/45 17

these are 215 40

£27 at my local Kwikfit, normally wouldn't use them but needed my new wheels balanced quickly last week and was the easiest garage for me to use. I did the same as you got a very good deal on a set of 17"s with winter tyres and put them on drove 300 miles at the weekend and have to say the ride is a lot better with the standard VRS wheels and tyres, I think even though they are the same size the side wall is slightly bigger/less low profile and improves the harsh ride no end :-) . I spoke to my brother who's a rep and used winter/snow tyres and says he normally leaves his on till end of april, so I figure I leave them on till then, sell the VRS alloys & tyres, and use that cash to buy summer tyres :-)

I use 17's in summer and 15's in winter bought secondhand winter tyres last year from Germany never used on eBay

M+S doesn't mean they're winter tyres although they might be. I have been running Nexen Winguard Sport winters continuously since we got our 1.2 30 months ago. They're 215s instead of 205s for that extra bit of protection on 17" wheels.

Still loads of life left although it isn't driven hard with just 69PS.

You'll be fine, but tell your insurers to be on the safe side. Just watch your speed as on mine the speedo no longer has any "margin" - 70 is 70!

If the wheels are aftermarket, Skoda centre caps will be a problem, but if VW group you'll find something to fit.

Look nice. Maybe post a pic when they are fitted. Considering 17" to replace my 15".
