4x4 or clutch fault

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hopefully someone can help with this one....

I've got a 2005 octavia 4x4 tdi estate. We're currently on holiday in the south of France with it and it's just started making some very worrying noises!

Drove it yesterday, only 10 miles or so and it was making a squeak which sounded like a stone caught in the brakes or something, didn't think too much of it. Went to drive it again today and the squeak is now much louder and had a few clonks here and there too. When it started clonking we came back, only drove about a mile in total. Seemed to loose some power in 2nd and 3rd. It is now making a horrible squeaking noise and clonks quite a bit, seems to be worse when crawling along.

When we bought it, it had just had the clutch, dmf and transfer box changed. All at around 95000m, it now done about 100000.

I'm worried that the transfer box has failed and that is what is making the clonky squeaky noise. If you take it out of gear and coast then it carries on making the noise :-(

Supposed to be driving home tomorrow

well by now I guess your on the way home or not,  can't help much but I had a new noise to worry about last week (on holiday)  started as a small grinding sound when turning the wheel from centre to the right  but not left,  as slow speed this got worse to the point I decided it could not be a stone/brake problem    let the whole thing cool off and then having to reverse out of an inclined parking space (nose up) the noise vanished and I've done approx 450 miles since no problem,     read the following  day on here of a couple of similar problems   seems the stone sticks in the caliper and rubs on the edge of the disc,     I guess you need to check the drive shaft flexes at least,  I think you could come home safely with the prop shaft removed if necessary   keep us posted good luck

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately it turned out to be the transfer box :-( ended up getting a hire car to get home and now have a huge bill for a new one :-(((

Ouch, where is the car now, still in France?

Considering the transfer box was replaced only 5,000 miles ago I'd be expecting the garage that replaced it to sort out their mistake?

Unless the previous owned bought a used box to get it away and then flogged the car.....

sorry to hear that
