At 17, the only way to do it is grab the Yellow Pages, sit down and call everyone up. Also check their websites if they have it listed. The price will, as you've seen, vary greatly so try them all. Whats good for one person, may be bad for someone else.

Have a quick gander at http://www.moneysupermarket.com/ click the insurance tab and give it some basic details.

It'll scrape your details from a truckload of on-line insurers and brokers. You WILL have to give more details if you go ahead and buy online as it doesn't get all the info that the different folks need, but it gives a very good indication adn looks at places that you may not have considered?

When I was in my teens, its4me gave me the best quote 3 years running, I don't think much of the customer service though...

Try Norwich Union ........ I tried many online companies ......but

NU quoted me happy ......

NU and DL gave me appaling quotes when I started out, they still do today. I've gone back and forth between Elephant and Admiral since then.

I'd try confused.com as a starting point

i'm insured with bell.co.uk this year as they were cheaper, your quotes sound massivly high though!!

i moaned at £740 for my mod'd 4x4, guess i'm lucky then really

Try Bell / Admiral. Just make sure you don't crash or otherwise have any need to actually use the insurance

I've had cause to make use of Admiral's policy, and found them to be good?

Well Iv'e tried everywhere else, but Direct line just cannot be beaten so I guess thats who I'm going to have to go with, but thanks for your suggestions guys!

Try Elephant.co.uk and put a parent on as a named driver (took me down £100). Should be quite cheap. Never had to use the insurance I have with elephant (many have said its not so good) - you get what you pay for and all that. But I've been fine for just over a year now.

I was with elephant.co.uk on my first car, and returned to them again this year. They also do an accelerated no claims scheme - can insure with them for 10 months instead of the 12 and pick up a years no claims. Provided you dont bend it! ;)
