Replacing AC compressor - oil amount?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive got a new AC compressor to fit after mine has given up the ghost.  Its all ready to fit along with the receiver dryer.  The system has been purged also.

I have read the total oil level in the system needs to be 120-150ml.  However Ive seen weird numbers about calculating what to add to the new compressor when fitting it - how does this correspond with what the overall total of 120-150ml?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Depends on the new compressor. You need to know if it contains oil or not, if so, how much.

The new one is an OEM Sanden, I think they come pre filled.

Do I base the new oil level by draining the old and new compressor and then calculating somehow the difference?

Yes, that's exactly how you do it. Drain the old compressor and measure the oil. Drain your new compressor and adjust the oil to suit.

However this will only be accurate providing the system hasn't been overfilled previously.

Its never been opened to my knowledge or leaked.  So simply replicate in the new compressor the amount in the old?

How is the remaining oil required calculated if we're aiming for 120-150ml total?

Unless you replace or remove each part and clean out you can't. But if you put back in what comes out you should be good.
