Interestingly, there appears to be a little confusion between reliability and consumables life. Friction linings are consumables which, if you use them more, will wear out quicker. Increasing torque will either lead to clutch slip and as a result, premature wear or it wont. If the clutch slip does not occur, there is no reason why the clutch should last any less miles than on a standard car apart from driving style. If you use the extra grunt on launches off the line, of course you will shred the clutch early. Same goes for brakes, tyres bushes etc.

Relaibility I would apply to drivetrain components (DMF for example) and engine bits.

Although given time of inspection this is more likely just residue leftover from caning it around Mallory Park - Never actually lost oil seriously that way. :)

No other remap only symptoms though - and thats including a good 18 months running a 150bhp PD100. ;)

Oh and Col, mine is now on 98k (20 months old) - Getting a bit sloppy, but mechanically it's fine. Had a new clutch at 20k and that's it :D OK the DM flywheel is FUBAR but other than that I've had to replace nothing :thumbup:

Mine is not remapped yet but I'll pretty much treat it the same - if I trash it I let the turbo cool down before switching off, I don't generally trash it when the engine is cold, and it does motorway miles mostly. I do take a backroad for a bit of fun every so often, and that will probably cause the wear & tear esp. on the tyres.

Unless I'm in a particularly bad mood I generally attempt to avoid wheelspin, can't afford to keep buying new rubber (for the car :naughty: )

i have a 2003 PD 130 golf, same engine as VRS. when i bought it new i revoed it more or less straight away. It now has a hybrid turbo and im pushing 200bhp+. My current mileage is............................. 115k. Had the hybrid turbo fittted at 80k. The engine is the same as it was when new, gearbox etc perfect. The extra power since new gave some clutch slip and it still does and its still original!(i have uprated sachs clutch in a box)

CV joints still fine, even thought the rubbers got torn which is normal for the golf anyway. Replaced front shocks at 100k.

The engine at 115k has not even started to burn oil.

but the Fabia/Ibiza/Polo platform is not quite built to the same std as the mk4/octy/bora there is more of a built to a price element - hence they use a lower spec of pd130 lump etc....

im sure this will have Fabia owners wailing but the supermini segment is very price driven and corners have been cut.

I still think driving style / use will have more of an effect in the long term but it cant be ignored.

I assume you mean PD130 rather than PD150... For a moment I thought you meant the Fabia PD130 version was some how lesser than the Golf PD130... :doh:

The PD130 inthe fabia platform use a KKK turbo. Golf ones uses a garrett.

Thats all I thought was different

Must admit,I thought whatever was plonked in Audis/VW's was exactly the same as what was dropped in Skoda/Seat.

Hence why they are such good buys

well according to etos the internal engine parts of the fabia vrs match that of the Golf PD130, so its basically the same engine

Cost savings from downgrading bits for two otherwise identical engines would in all probability be outweighed by the cost increase of model diversity. Cant see it somehow.

id say its bodywork and plastics used thats cheaper than maybe VW etc, mechanically all the same. What ratio is the gearbox now? The Golf in 6th does 100mph at 2950rpm.

Noticed how much a difference this made while at awesoem the other day. Shorter box does around 95 in fourth mine done around 110.

Interesting read... as for reasons for differences in reliablility, I must agree with the driving style point. There's a lot to be said for mechanical sympathy, even when pressing on. By making smooth, progressive inputs, you will lessen the stresses suffered by the car. Having said that, luck also seems to play it's part in the equation...

I've done all the main mods to my car now so I'll be working on the same principal as with my mountain bike - when it breaks, upgrade it.

Definitely agree with that. I'm saving up for a new clutch first, before I get the remap done, so I am able to replace it if it goes/when it goes.
