Tappety noise?!

Featured Replies

ok, I have a new noise... (worries me, nuburgring trip coming up early sept!) under hard acceleration, on full boost (doesn't do it otherwise) I seem to be getting a rattly tappety noise from somewhere (I assume engine) , and I don't know what it is.... I would hope its not actually tappets, it could be something other than engine.... only does it on full boost (can only hear it in 3rd, can't say it doesn't happen in 2nd, car is a little loud!)

fuel is the same 97 RON BP super. all we can really get round here....

haven't had to top up any oil since the oil change a few thousand miles ago ...

no visable smoke...

oil pickup was changed about 15k ago...

car runs perfect, very fast, feels good....

any ideas? (its not a problem I have heard of in here before!)

thanks in advance!

It is possible it might be combustion knock, if you lift slightly when it does it, does it reduce or stop?.

Can you "play " with the noise when revving up at a standstill?, if you can, it may be crank bearings, but I am more inclined to think either knock or extreme pre ignition.

Have you ruled out the obvious stuff like loose ancilliaries, dmf etc?. Is your car mapped at all?.

if I lift off it will stop....  no noise on tick over, no noise just revving it, I can only hear it on full boost , full throttle in 3rd gear ...... ancillary belt is newish (about 2 years old) , no noise on "normal " driving..... just the full boost ..... but nothing has changed, same fuel, same suppliers.... feels as fast as ever... runs sweet....

G60 flywheel , VR6 clutch, stage one map, decat 3" system.......

it weirdly sounds like combustion knock..... thats why I titled the thread so..... but I didn't think that would be possible... ECU adjusting with a knock sensor etc.... using the same fuel I always have.....

I'm just "understanding" that a new noise means something may not be right ....... BUT it is just loving being driven quick.....

only thing that has changed is the recent mini service I did,,,, new oil, and new plugs filters etc.... only real change was the plugs to NGK 7's.... (that I researched and asked on here first!) but its run for a couple of thousand miles since with no issues... felt better after the service, still does.... probably feels the best it has since I owned it!

Maybe I'm just paranoid... its not a loud noise, but our lass has noticed it too..... that slight tickle that sounds like a "pink" from an old engine that cant adjust timing...

Do you have access to VCDS at all?, as I would check whether you are running light on fuelling higher up the rev range/on boost, could be a partly blocked fuel filter. You could also check whether your knock sensor is actually doing what it should be by controlling timing advance.

Just out interest, what did you gap the 7's to?.

fuel filter renewed at service.... was fuelling ok, but to be honest the fuel pump itself may be 160k old, so may not be up to supplying the pressure anymore...

left the7's at gap they came with, 0.7 i think....

Jason will be bringing his laptop to the camping do this weekend, I will do a scan, and update! :)

I seem to remember something about altering the plug gap on 7's, but I can't for the life of me remember what it should be.

I would not do much until Jason logs it for you, as 10-15 mins of logging could save you a substantial bit of wedge.
