problem installing head unit

Featured Replies

i'm trying to put a cd unit in my felicia, but keep blowing fuses.

there was no radio in the car when i got and just bare wires leading to the din slot.

i've bought a male iso plug to wire in to connect to the player, but i've guessed the wire colours.

i traced the speaker wires, so i know i've got them right, but i've not got a multimeter, so am guessing the other wires.

three of the other colours from the car had bullet connectors on from the previous owners stereo, so i've assumed them to be constant, ignition, and ground.

with the wires just connected to the iso plug with connector blocks and no stereo connected, the fuse blows, and each new one i put in does the same even though the power can't go anywhere and each wire is seperated.

car colours wer red yellow and brown, which i've assumed match to red, yellow, and black on the iso.

i can't understand why the fuse keeps popping when the power has no route to circuit.??

any ideas please?

because something else is connected elsewhere or the cable has caught somewhere and shorting to earth.

normally the red and yellow are the feeds and the brown/black being the earth.

you need a tester, with the ignition off and fuses(for the stereo) out you need to test between the chassis and the red and yellow to see which cable has a fault. then you won't waste time tracing the wrong cable for a fault :)

thanks for the reply.

good idea, but the fuse was going even without the keys in it, so i guess if there is a fault it'll be in the constant live.

should i be ok to run it with just an ignition live, apart from the fact it won't store a memory?

depends on the unit, some won't work and some will.

just trace and replace the permanent live, shouldn't be too difficult in your car. not a lot to it compared o modern models.

i just realised how silly my comment was.

the fault could still be on either line because the unit wasn't attached, so it's irrelevant wether the ignition was on or not.

if it is the permanent live at fault i think i'll just run a new one from the battery or another location.

cheers for the help.

not that silly, which fuse is blowing? the permanent or the ignition?

they both run off the same fuse don't they?

no. 15 from memory.

if the ignition live was shorted, then the ignition would never turn off would it?
