Step-son's 1.4mpi 8v been in to garage for exploration of misfire and come back with lots of stuff unclipped or carelessly reassembled, and i never noticed these four holes - is something missing?

Mine has the same holes. I think it's where the filter would be mounted on diesel models.

No idea what they're for, Lee but it's definitely not for the fuel filter.........

It's for xenon headlights, it's where the bracket fits to hold the ballast.

On mine, the nearside ballast clips in a metal bracket on the back of the headlamp. The offside slides into a clip underneath the slam panel.

 

It might be for the diesel fuel filter holder.
