How long did it take you...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone has sold a vRS privately recently? What was your experience? How long did it take you to sell?

Or from the other side, did anyone buy a vRS privately? Or were you only prepared to buy through a trader for warranties etc?

Cheers

Andrew

I've recently (4-5 months ago) bought one privately with

No warranty. ( I'm obtaining a Skoda one soon so not too bad)

I knew it was a cat D as I was prepared to expect it not to be mint ( it want far off to be fair, needed little bits ) and it had limited history too.

I knew the issues with the engines on these etc and thought well I'll take a punt on it as it was cheap (£4000 - 60 plate 52k etc)

Touch wood, it seems to be a good one, or rather better than most.

Used about a litre over the 4-5 Months which probably tallys with Skodas standard expectations anyway.

So it's a case of trusting the car and your own judgment on the history side of things.

I'm currently in dispute with Skoda Customer Services as to getting hold of the Warranty Invoices and Service Invoices due to Data Protection....

At least I know it's been services at main dealer up to a certain mileage and it's had some warranty work done ( engine not one of them as it's still got a CAVE in it.)

I bought mine privately at the start of October. I spent about a month searching for the right one and reading every bit of info i could find about them. finally found one for £6k, full skoda history and 43k on the clock. 2011 CAVE in Race Blue. spent a few days asking the owner questions and managed to knock him down to £5500 before seeing it in person. went to look at it, drove it and gave the chap the cash there and then! I also gave him his arm back.. :)

'

Very happy so far, unsure on oil consumption as I've only driven it a handful of times. Also checked with dealer about history and they confirmed full skoda history and gearbox oil swap out. i will try and extract some more info from them when i have a spare minute as to what exactly has been done and what parts used.

Obviously didn't get any warranty but soon after buying i signed up to skoda's warranty for £292 for a year  :p

Thanks for the replies.

Mine is currently having the engine replaced. From a buyers point of view, would this make you think 'stay away' or would you consider it a benefit that it has a new engine??

If you get Skoda UK to give an extended warranty on the replacement engine if it is being replaced under the Manufacturers Warranty (not just on the rest of the period of the Manufacturers warranty if under 2 years.)

then that might help give a buyer some sort of incentive to buy it, and if the price is right.

I didnt buy mine through a private seller, although I will admit a few things; I didnt have a clue about the issue that the TSI was having with either the engine or the gear box. I was previously the owner of a 07 plate Fabia Mk1 VRS so had my trust in skoda as the car was very. very good. Only later on when I looked at my 'new' cars history when buying I saw that it had been recalled for the gear box - no issues reported with it on the paper work. I found out about the potential engine issues through this forum, after buying. Luckily I havent had to top up one drop of oil and its service is due in January (I paid into Skodas monthly scheme to cover their services over the next 3 years; i bought it after booking it in and paying for its last service, so until my loan (best deal you I could find at 3.1% interest) finishes.

There will be plenty of people out there who will buy without doing research, if thats private or a trader. Personally to me it was about the right price and at the right age that did the deal as I loved the car.

17K on the clock and it cost me £8603 (including interest) for a 2013 plate (just over 2 and a half years old)

If its being replaced by a dealership then i would consider it a great bonus and wouldnt put me off at all.

It just depends if people know about the engines, if they dont they might think its a bad thing being replaced, but if people know how prone they are to failure having a new replacment engine would give me a piece of mind... at least for around the first 30,000 miles or so anyway! :D

Well I think I am going to sell it privately. Could do with getting the best ££££ I can for it.

Expect to see it on here for Sale soon. Annoyingly I have a long wait on parts arriving, so it is not going to be for a few weeks yet. I will take out a Freedom membership in prep.

So to bring back my old thread and to answer my own question... "How long did it take you to sell your car privately?"

- Well it is taking quite a while as it happens.

I put my car up on here back in November not expecting much, was still using the car and not rushed to sell. In the New Year I thought I'd push for the sale, so posted an ad on Autotrader first and now Gumtree and eBay.

All the ads are still live and are getting some views but zero interest. I've had just one call from someone who didn't show up.

I don't think I've been unreasonable on price given the competition and have recently lowered it. The car is in great condition and has been well maintained and loved.

I've been watching a nice 13 plate with still a bit of warranty left that's been on sale for ages! First Autotrader now eBay. He has reduced his price a few times and is now not far off my asking price! So this is all not boding well for my own sale aspirations! :(

Not sure if it's a bad time to sell, too niche a car or people not liking to buy privately. Probably a combination of all of these.

Anyway not much point to this post other than to share my experience. Maybe entice up some interest for my car as well..

The issue is that Dealers are asking £6,000 or so and will accept less and even low mile ones have asking prices at £6,500 or around that.

Some might have new engines and with an extended warranty on them.

?

Do you get a Warranty Extended on the replaced engine from Skoda?

There isn't anything I have came across for £6k that is not either older, higher mileage, or more owners.

I may have to lower the price further though, similar cars to mine (i.e. 35k, 61 plate, 2 owners) are now starting to show up at some dealers for £7k. The prices have came down considerably even just in the last month.

The new engine is not going to be seen as a selling point I would imagine, it might in fact put a lot of people off. So I have just priced it based on similar models for sale. There is a parts warranty on the engine to November 2018 and this is transferable to the new owner.
