figuring out a few costs

Featured Replies

So I think I'm reaching the point where I need to decide to keep my car or not.

Mileage is 90k, FSH, 130Bhp stock (minus BT stereo which works with the MFSW), It has cruise control too which is a big plus. This car is everything I want but I think I have a bunch of big costs coming up in the next 5-25k and I feel like I've been dumping a fair bit into it.

So.. any idea on costs for:

1. Turbo replacement

(It had sticky issues, but I rarely get these as doing good motorway mileage, using vpower and the vanes get a good work out, figure it's due replacement by 20k miles)

2. Clutch & DMF replacement (master + slave too?)

(slipping on hill starts and when cold, but still fairly minor) Feeling the slip a bit more now, but can probably hold out.

3. Full suspension refresh (stock again).

(creaking a lot going over speed humps at anything above a crawl and honestly a little keen to sort out the handling)

4. Cambelt and waterpump

(last done in 2012/2013 so I'd be looking at getting it done fairly soon)  Sorted earlier in 2017 with a touch over 100k miles on the clock for a touch over £450 inc. servicing.

I think aside from this there aren't anything really major aside from consumables.

Just wanted to get an idea as my assumption is all the above comes to about 2k, in which case that's 2k (plus maybe 800 for the car on a bad day?) towards a replacement.

I think the cost all depends on whether you can DIY, if you can I'd say it's a keeper.

1. Turbo, have you cleaned the vanes? Also, have you cleaned the actuator? This is really hard to get to, but mine was seized up good and proper. Alternatively I picked up a good condition pd130 turbo for £115 posted!

2. No idea.

3. You can pick up a full set of bilstein B4s for pennies, probably £200 or less for all four. Springs would probably need a refresh as well but also, probably not too expensive. B4s are a high quality OEM replacement btw.

4. I'd budget about £350 for that.

3) What makes you think that new dampers will make the bushes quieter?

Reading into his statement about sorting out the handling that he wants to change dampers as well.

to clear up - I used to have issues, but haven't had any in an age. It's more about the worry of replacing the turbo at 120k miles

DIY'ing it seems unlikely for the work I've mentioned to be honest. I don't have an awful lot of space let alone access to a safe space to work on the car so it will have to go to a mechanic.
