Dog crate for Octavia

Featured Replies

Suitable boot only dog crate for a Octavia Hatch back for a English Springer Spaniel and a Working Cocker Spaniel for European holidays

I have a crate from pets at home. It was either the medium or the large, and is the more expensive of the two they offer so you get the two doors on it. It's like it was made for the boot of the hatch with only a couple of mm between it and the glass. It's fine for my sprocker spaniel but I don't know if I'd want to squeeze 2 in there! You're probably best off going for a dog guard.

My Octavia is a dog crate, for Barney.

He likes to jump in so I cannot go anywhere without him!

Tough Staffy cross? .

Soppy little bugger, Lol.

I'm also interested in this info as we're looking to get a dog next year. I like the added security a crate gives you over a dog guard as it means you can leave the boot partially or fully open on occasion, safe in the knowledge your dog can't get out. Is your crate big enough for a labrador sized pooch?

I'd say the crate would be fine while the labrador is a puppy but I think we are going to have to get a larger crate for our spaniel for at home as I don't think he'll be able to turn around in it by the time he's fully grown (he's 8 months so nearly grown). To clarify we have this one

In size medium and it is like it was made for the car (55 plate octavia vrs hatch). I honestly think you would struggle to go 1mm bigger in any direction. The estate could go higher and deeper bit no wider.

Thanks for the info, need to have a better think about my strategy. We're looking at Golden Retrievers and Labradors and the 'home' cage recommended (Ellie-Bo 42") is a fair bit bigger than that medium crate in your link, so usong the whole boot may be the only option. I'll get in there with a tape measure tomorrow :)

Use the whole boot and see if you can find some bars or thick wired mesh (part of a large cage would do) to make a sort of gate when the boot is open.

I did this in mine when we went camping, for Barney to sleep in. Never used it though in the end, he slept in the tent.

If they are big dogs you would only need a few bars across, slotted in each side somehow.

I have my boot lined plus a custom dog cage in the boot of mine (from Hamsterbaskets) that was made to measure so my Cocker can get a bit of height from the cage but only takes up half a boot width and uses most of the available length. However I only wanted this so I had another half of the boot to put a pram / buggy in for our little one when we go away anywhere with the Dog.

It's perfect, but not cheap - I'd personally get a proper travall/Skoda dog guard, line the boot and purchase one of the bars the will hold the boot open a few inches but still locked if you're wanting to be able to let them sleep in it etc and don't mind the whole space being taken up

Yes this is exactly the conclusion I arrived at yesterday. The proper dog guards show up on Ebay every now and again and I see people recommending 'Hatchbags' which seems like a good solution for a liner (I already have a Skoda boot mat) coupled with a Ventlock or similar  .

Thanks all for the input and apologies OP for hijacking your thread :)
