Motorola HF850 installed!!

Featured Replies

This is just a quick note (boast??) to let you know that I have fitted the Motorola hands free kit and to pass on any tips (having learnt the hard way myself:confused: )

As you can see in the pics, it's all fitted centrally. The bluetooth receiver is fitted behind the ASR switch and the wires route behind the stereo to the microphone ( which is slotted into the right hand coner of the tray of the Lupo cupholder) and down to the speaker, which is tucked away underneath the centre console. You can just see it poking out.

The control unit wire feeds throught a small cut out in the top of the spare switch to the receiver unit.

The power comes from the back of the fuse box from fuses 41 and 42. One is a permanent 12V feed and the other is a switchable 12V via the ignition.

To get to tha back of the fuse box is a f**&*&g nightmare but it is the best and neatest solution. If you have undone all the screws to get the lower dash panel off, make sure you don't spend 45 minutes swearing and sweating, unable to get it off, only to find that the reason is because you haven't taken the ignition key out and that's what's holding the panel from coming off:O :o :O :o :O

The unit works well, is very neat and is fairly (when you know what you're doing) easy to install. There is a small area on the top of the lupo cuholder unit which I initially attached the receiver unit to. However it was about 1 - 2 mm too high to get the stereo back in properly. I used sticky velcro to secure the unit to the cupholders which may have added to the height of the unit. Looking back, had I used something thinner like double sided tape, I reckon it may have fitted in. From what I could see, that would have been the Rolls Royce solution and I may look back into it again.

The only thing I haven't done is fitted the orange mute wire from the bluetooth receiver to the stereo, because I didn't have the information where to connect it at the time. There is a unit available (for about

Oh Bugger! Looks like the radio mysteriously tuned itself into Radio 2.:o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O :o :O

Oh the shame of it!

Nice neat install there mate. The controller looks like it's supposed to be there too. The mic must be pretty good to pick up your voice from there as they normally need to be pointed towards the driver.

The adapter to use the car speakers for handsfree is a worthwhile investment. Make sure its the type that breaks into the iso speaker connector as your radio wont have a line-in for handsfree. I really don't rate the standalone speakers that come with these kits.

As for the mute connection, you should be able to identify it from the markings on the radio if you remove it.

Very neat, and looks good too with the control unit being mounted centrally (you can't often say handfree installs look particularly good either!)

I'm not sure about the mic location either, but if it works and people can hear you then fair enough.

I've had two handsfree installs now, one using the standard speaker and one using the speaker adaptor box (can't remember the name of it). The guy who installed the kit in my Fabia threw it in for free. It works well but I'm not entirely sure if I'd have paid £30 for it. The speaker that was with the previous Nokia kit (CARK-126) was perfectly capable in my last car. Both the kits I've used have been capable of muting the stereo themselves anyway, without the additional box.

I heard that the small grille in the front light on the headlining was designed to have a mic behind it - have you thought about repostioning it there.

I'm toying with the idea of putting my tomtom go 700 mic there when I get round to it

Some years ago the radio mute connection came adrift on my Mondeo. I found the method of determing the mute connection at www.siocommunications.co.uk/Radio-Mutes.html

As the handsfree kit puts an earth on the mute wire, simply use a low watttage bulb with one side connected to earth, and then simply go along the free terminals on the back of the radio until the radio mutes.

Having said that, out of choice I would use an audio lead that routes the sound through the cars radio speakers as you get a much better sound quality.
