Heating/AC Fan broken?

Featured Replies

Hello

I've got a 60-plate Octavia.

This morning the missus started it up and because it was icy she turned the heating on and she describes a cracking sound and then increased noise from under the bonnet.

I've had a quick look and when the heating is on there is increased noise from the passenger side of the rear of the engine bay under the bonnet. If you turn the heating off the noise goes away.

That's as far as I've got with the diagnostics as I had to get to work.

I've told her she'll have to drive it with no heating for now.

Anyone familiar with the anatomy of the heating/ac system? It sounds to me like a fan is damaged. Perhaps it was frozen overnight and then broke on starting. I've not looked at anything in detail but the frequency of the sound definitely fits with something that is rotating.

I live in SE3 and all the Skoda dealers (Dartford & Croydon) are saying they can't do diagnostics till the NY so I'm going to try and get a Haynes manual and see if I can at least identify the broken part and get it ordered if only so I can take it to a backstreet mechanic for fitting.

Anybody able to give advice on this problem?

Cheers!

The cabin air filter is below the glove compartment , If there is something hitting the motor blades it will be obvious.
