Superb 3v 280 AWD danger?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Finally I got some snow in the south of Sweden. And ofc I wanted to see what the car goes for.

I've done allot of playing with AWD cars. I've owned Golf R, Audi TT RS (Tuned and modified), Audi A8L with Torsen diff.

So I turned of the ESP and Stability on my new Superb 280 I also turned on individual where I have everything set to sport. I had the DSG in manual so that I knew I had torque and the right gear. I gave a little gas. To see how she responds. She does wanna slide her ass a little bit, which is quite nice. But there was a few CM of wet snow. Not a problem as long as I have power to the wheels. All of the sudden, the car started to correct what I was doing. Even tho the stability was turned OFF... This caused the car to slide to the left and the steering would not respond at all. I almost slided down a ditch. I did not brake or anything, I just let it coast to save the situation.

Problem now is that I dont trust the car. I was very suprised that it acted like this. No other car I've driven have done this.

So has anyone out there played with the Gen 5 haldex or maybe had the same situation like me?

I would very much like to know why the car handles like this. I want a car to be playful because that is good if I ever come in a situation. I always play with my cars to get a good feel for them and to learn where the limits are.

But what I did today was almost not even playing. I just gave her a feel and she almost killed me (atleast that's how I feel).

So, let's brainstorm this.

I'm gonna try to find a large parking lot in a couple of days and really punch her to see what she does.

Wonder if there's a way to fully disable driving aids? like a long press of something like in BMW's rather than just a semi OFF which will still kick in if the car breaches some thresholds.

After some digging, it turns out that there's two options in the menu for stability control.

First option is to set ASR off, which is the anti spin. Second option is "ESC Sport" which basically limits the ESC but does NOT turn it off. This is what happent to me. In my mind, ESC was OFF when it in fact was on but limited. This is why the car tried to "help" me which almost resulted in me driving down the ditch.

I've seen a Video on YouTube where an Octavia has the option "ESC OFF" instead of "ESC Sport" and it's the exact same green/black menu. I wonder if the Superb can be recoded via VAG-COM to have the ESC OFF option instead...

Officially the ESC can't be turned off AFAIK. Some people have been able to turn it off through using VCDS software, but from what I remember reading about it, it didn't work on all models. If the option worked it disabled ASR on a short press of the button and ESC on a long press.

I've found the ESC on my Suberb II to be universally helpful any time I notice it operating. It has never sent me in the wrong direction, but then again I drive knowing it is turned on all the time. If you're drifting the car with a bit of opposite lock, the ESC will try to make the car go in the direction the wheels are pointed, which sounds like what you've experienced.

Thanks for your reply.

It turns out that you can actually recode this with VAG-COM. It's supposed to be the same as on Golf MK7 R.

Here's how to do it

03 ABS > 07 Coding > Long COding > Choice 29 byte (last one)

Hex Values

05 - ESC ON/ASR Off/ESC OFF

06 - ESC ON/ESC SPORT / ESC OFF

09 - stock

Why on earth would you buy a 4 x 4 car fitted with just about every modern safety feature designed to keep you safe whilst driving in difficult conditions and then disable them?

Surely if you crash (as inevitably you will) and your insurers discover you had switched off various features designed to improve safety (which they will when they look into the vehicles history) they will reject any claim leaving you well out of pocket.

If you want to play like this buy a suitable car and take up rallying. Don't do it on public roads.

Well mate, you may not understand. But I'm a playfull guy. I love to drift with AWD and so I have with many cars. I drive allot and I need a very capable car. AWD doesn't mean you can't play. Actually, playing with and AWD car is very much fun. And you should try it some time.

Re-coding it does not mean it's disabled permanently. Re-coding only means that you can disable if you want to.

And about the warranty, it dont actually care so much about that.

So far I have drifted with 14 ton trucks, AWD cars, RWD cars and FWD cars. It's allot of fun when the snow comes a few days a year. If I crash one day, then so be it. Atleast I had fun.

And who said anything about public roads? I live out in the country and the road leading to my house is very long and it's owned by me. On that road I can do whatever I want.

Remember mate, that not everyone is like you. We're all different and like different things. The point of this thread is not to tell eachother what's right and wrong. The point was to defeat ESC with the push of a button.

Have a nice evening.

14 ton truck drifting sounds like fun :D. The thing anyone complaining about disabling the ESC being bad should remember is that ESC is not for people who are intentionally driving past the traction of the car in suitable conditions, it's for that time you're driving along normally and the road conditions change in an unexpected way or you have to take evasive action. Driving intentionally for drifting is a very different technique to normal driving on public roads, so ESC will naturally try and stop drifting as for most drivers in normal conditions that's what happens just before they slide off the road.

Know all about driving past the traction limit, raced a rear wheel drive car with over 300 bhp/tonne for long enough,

Also know how effective a good traction/ESP system can be on a road car. My old BMW was brilliant in the snow despite all the sages who said they were rubbish. OK, it had all season tyres fitted but one tap on the button engaged the mode for pulling away in the snow and another tap put it back to normal mode after which it drove brilliantly. This is what BMW advised. A long press disengaged ESP/traction but when its so effective why would you do that.

But none of these systems will overturn the laws of physics or will turn a total nob head into a driving god. Me and neighbors watched one on our street about 5 winters ago when out clearing snow, 3 day old 5 series, street covered in snow and he drove like it was a normal day. When he braked and turned for the corner car just went strait on, up the pavement and through a hedge. He was furious saying that he was suing BMW since the car was clearly faulty. Shut him up when the police arrived and told him he was lucky no one was on the pavement or coming round the corner and to slow down in future.

What we do not want on the roads are talentless nob heads with fat wallets driving 300 bhp cars with safety systems switched off.

Exactly my point. Very well formated.

ESC is great if you're caught of guard driving normally, but when having fun on a huge parkinglot or something. You'd wanna turn it off.

I bought OBDeleven and have now made quite a few changes to the car. One of them is being able to turn OFF ESC.

And for the serious skidpan, dont you worry. I aint no noob and I aint stupid...

You make it sound like I'm gonna go drifting in the middle of the city with people and cars around. I dont do that even if you think so. I will have fun when conditions allow me to. Just like everyone else. Remember, YOLO!
