Cold start problems, white smoke advice to members

Featured Replies

First to say hello to everyone I'm a newbie here.

Was part of omegaowners forum long time ago but now driving a skoda

I found this forum two days ago after trying to resolve a problem with my 1.9tdi octavia ALH engine code.

After lots of reading of other member problems I would like to share my findings to help maybe other members (i guess people in UK should be fine but in Eastern Europe can experience the same problems)).

Was having problems which started three days ago. Car was shuggering and felt hesitant at times also louder.

Parked it and in the morning it would not start.

Mechanic managed to start it only after spraying some hot start spray

Also recently it was starting porly (I know the glow plugs are bad) and it would throw out a white smoke when starting but here it is almost never that cold.

And the consumption went up especially at idle.

Possible culprits according to the forum were, MAF, timing, water temp sensor, air in fuel line, valve in tank. fuel pump.

Cambelt was done three months ago and now rechecked and it was ok.

There was an air leak close to fuel filter but it wasn't the problem.

MAF was ok.

Fuel pump was also serviced along with cambelt it to was ok.

Glow plugs are not related to consumption so not related.

Finnaly we found the culprit.

Car was tanked last several times at the exact gas pump in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The pump was Gazprom. It turned out that the fuel was a piece of s....

The mechanic in the end connected the bottle full of heating oil just to test it and the car started without a glitch.

So I tanked the full tank of premium diesel on another pump and it almost immediately felt like a another brand new car.

My advice to members, if you experience problems with cold start and juddering try putting some premium diesel from another pump it may solve your problem without any expensive repairs
