I understand the hardware is 5230 and mapping relates to 2012. I don't think there is any need to change from 5230, but

can anyone tell me from the info above the possible origin of the unit.  I would also like to change the way of updating new maps to useing the micro card if that's possible. I have searched for the software but the one link takes me to a page constantly under construction.

SO

What do members recommend as the easiest way for me to move forward. I don't necessarily want new mapping every year, and I don't mind paying reasonable money, . Advice please guys. Also how can I check what size the hard drive partitions are to enable me to update to v14 as opposed to the current 2012 maps. Does v14 need more space.

I can see that it came from a June 2011, or later, vehicle and your map software (7918) is v9.0.

The 5230 firmware is, I'm sure, recent enough to enable the 'hidden' menus so try pressing the SETUP button for at least 20 seconds. This should first take you to the version display where you presumeably obtained the details you supplied, but then if you keep pressing it should take you to an even more detailed menu which tells you everything you'd ever want to know about your Columbus.

Your firmware is fairly recent, you can update the maps to v14 directly.

You have to use the DVD, RNS510 can't use the SD card to update the maps, at least not directly. There is a method to do this involving a special cd that loads the maps from the sd card (check https://paulroberts69.wordpress.com/2015/10/01/upgrading-firmware-and-maps-on-vw-rns-510-satnav/ ),  although I don't recommend it since the unit accepts dual layer DVDs.

Thanks both. Didn't realise that holding the setup menu down longer brought up a second hidden menu. Got the first one to get the info. Will try longer. Assume my hd and firmware will be already set up and big enough to upgrade to 14. All I need now is someone who has previous map dvds they've finished with and can legitimately sell on an earlier one for me. Don't think I'll bother with micro cards.

Can someone confirm please that just installing a map update to the latest v14 will not affect anything else, or stop any existing wheel functions etc from working properly. Thanks

Maps update won't affect anything other than the maps themselves.
