smell from heater

Featured Replies

A friend of mine picked up a lovely vrs during the week, there is a horrible smell from the heater, its only when the fan is blowing hot air.

He has have chaged the pollen filter and flushed the coolant so far, any ides??

Has he tried any of the ventilation cleaning solutions?

Euro Car Parts have an anti-bacterial spray that comes with a long spray tube to get it into all nooks & crannies.

From Bullseye Motor Factors there's an "aerosol bomb" which you set going with the ventilation system running (on recycle) and it permeates throughought the system. The car smells like 'Lynx deodorant' for a couple of days, but then the smell is ok when it's calmed down!!

I had an acrid burning smell with heater on. Turned out to be hazard switch. It squeaked when the car was started, removed and smelled the switch and it stank. New switch no smell or squeak !

Not the washer fluid turned rank is it?, mine smelt like cats p through the vents when I used them with the fans.

Also drop the glove box down, the fan motor is in there, stick your nose in and have a sniff, may be the fan motor has something stuck in the vanes causing resistance to it turning. Was the pollen filter badly blocked with solid debris? Do all the motors on the heater panel move all the flaps for recirc etc?.

Hazard switch is a good shout too, but not a common one so much.
