Laura- auto transmission problem

Hi friends.

I have an autotransmission issue in my laura (as called in India). When I shift to N or to R everytime, the gear display goes off and the car remains in neutral and any attempt to shift the gear is vain. The car has to be restarted again to become normal. 

 

Unable to understand the problem. Any help please.

What age is the car (an Octavia over here I believe)? Is it DSG or an older traditional automatic?
