Gear stick stiff in neutral

Featured Replies

Hello All

I have just bought a '59 plate Octavia 1.6 CR TDi, which has 140,000 on the clock. It runs lovely, the only issue is that the gearstick is very stiff when in neutral. It doesn't centre easily and is hard to move side to side. Gear changes themselves are OK from 1 to 2 and from 3 to 4, it's just stiff going across from 2-3 and from 4-5 and when pushing across to reverse.

Any thoughts on where to start?

Thanks very much

Check the gearbox oil level.

Thanks skodacarman, I will do that.

I was wondering if it might be the linkage cables? I've read a topic on here that describes this, but their problem was with gear changes as well, mine seems to just be the neutral position.

I've got the car booked in to check the linkage cables, as that is what my friendly mechanic thinks is the most likely issue.

I'm a bit worried about driving it too much in the meantime in case i put too much strain on the cables and something snaps.

Anyone know if that is likely to happen, and if so, what sort of damage could a snapped linkage cable to?

Thanks again all.
