AIRBAG SWITCH

Featured Replies

hear we go,

if i disconnect the cars battery ,

1/ how long do i need to wait before the airbags are safe to remove and dose this include the glove box switch

2/ wheel the airbag warning light still come on when i reconnect ,

3/ wheel it turn off as i drive up the road

Normally it's about 15 minutes to half an hour for an airbag system to become safe, this includes everything to do do with the system, the switch in the glove box just tells the airbag system  to not deploy the passenger airbag in the event of a crash.

As soon as you reconnect the battery the airbag system will work as normal, i.e the system will run a self check and tun the light out if it's working fine. No need to drive up the road.

Before when I took the glove box out I didn't disconnect the battery. Then when I put the glove box back together and reconnected the air bag light wouldn't go out. I ended up going to the local skoda garage and they charged me for a new

glo box switch and air bag reset.

so you can understand my concern when it comes anything to do with airbags,

that does bring up errors on the can bus, Always disconnect the battery if u go near anything to do with airbags, not only that but it takes away the risk of an airbag or seatbelt pretentioner accidently deploying.

It does happen.

Recently cahanged the steering wheel for an mfsw and did the following:

Disconnected negative terminal of battery.

Disconnected positive terminal of battery. I left the battery disconnectd for 12 hours, proabably excessive, bot general consensus of opinion, for safety reasons, at least an hour.

When the work was done, and BEFORE reconnecting battery, insert ignition key and turn on. Connect the battery in the reverse order, pos then neg.

The reason for turning the ignition on before re-connecting the battery is that you, and hopefully no one else, is anywhere near an airbag. Should there be a fault and an airbag deploys, you are not in the way. The only fault that came up was the steering wheel, but that was a steering sensor issue and disappeared after about 50 yards of driving.
