Removing the CAT

Featured Replies

I need a little help here to make sure I won't be doing anything to disrupt my cars performance in the long run...

To those of you who can help me:

I understand that under the car (at least the 2.0), right after the engine you have the CAT converter, and then the oxygen sensor, then the muffler, and then the final backbox.

Will removing the CAT cause any problems in the long run for me as far as the ECU and O2 sensor are concerned? I won't be removing the O2 sensor, in fact we won't even be touching it. Everyone else I know here who knows the subject says it should be fine, and the guys at the dealership said it should be fine as well, except one guy, and he's the guy I usually talk to. He says he's not so sure of it but as far as his knowledge goes, it may not be the best idea.

As far as I know, all the CAT does is reduce the emissions of the exhaust to lessen the amount of carbon monoxide coming out, which is done purely for the US and European emissions control.

Anyone?

your right in what it does mil but on some cars it makes a fault code come up as it detects the higher emissions at the final sensor.

it won't do any damage but it might bring up a fualt code and a light on the dash.

hopefully yours will be fine.

Thanks man... but I don't want any lights coming up....

Do you think you can confirm this for me? Maybe you have a contact who can confirm? Ross, If you're reading this, please help out & confirm :D

So miles from nowhere in the desert. It won't be a problem!!

you might need a mil eliminator to avoid any lights on the dash. and that is what they are, i'm not taking the ****

A "Malfunction Indication Light Eliminator". I believe it usually involves modifying the sensor which detects the emissions so it always returns a valid result and stops the check engine light coming on...

No direct experience of them as none of my cars have been that fussy
