I have a 1.2-86-TSI which is on an extended warranty.

The turbo actuator and waste gate are making the usual noises (rattling on the overrun) This I hope will be covered by the warranty. I believe this was accepted as a problem by VAG, and that a TPI was issued to the effect that a shim was to be fitted to overcome this annoyance.

George, would you have by any chance the number/reference of that relevant tpi please.

The shim modification was to prevent complete failure of the actuator. 

The noise is usually the wastage itself rattling within the turbo. 

As far as I'm aware - there is no "fix" and the noise (whilst annoying) is deemed as a characteristic of this setup.

ive seen the same characteristic on many other cars outside the VW group that use a similar turbo such as BMW. 

I once replaced the turbo on a 1.2TSI on a car with 50 miles on the clock. The turbo sounded exactly the same post repair.

From what I can glean, most people are being told 'dont worry' their all like that, nothing to worry about.
