I have seen an original MDI interface lead for connecting an iPod to a Columbus head unit. But the lead on looks to be about eight inches long. 

 

My question is, where is the lead supposed to go to?

The lead connects to an MDI (Multi Device Interface) which is a separate module. The module connects to the Columbus. So you need the lead and the MDI interface to make it work.
