CD/DVD error

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I just bought a lovely 09 skoda superb that I'm very happy with. However, the sat nav maps were a bit out of date. I bought a disc on-line for about £25 and popped it into the CD slot. 10 seconds later it popped out again and "CD/DVD Error - Please check CD/DVD". I presumed that the disc was a dud with a £25 lesson learned about the legitimicy of some internet sales.  Unfortunately though, I'm now getting this with every CD. It could be coincidence that the disc drive snuffed it right at that time, but i doubt it.

Everything else is still working fine - radio, handsfree, sat nav but when you press the media button, it says 'no media available' even if there's a CD in the slot.

When you insert a CD, it doesn't make a sound, there's no sound like it's trying to read a disc, just silence for about 15 seconds or thereabouts until it pops out and the error message comes up. If you don't take it out it draws the CD back in.

I've tried a hard reset with the arrow buttons and 'i' button together. It wiped the radio station settings and bluetooth pairing but nothing else and the old maps were still there. I tries to 'restore factory settings' in setup, but it came as as 'not possible'. It happened to be in the garage getting new bearings, the mechanic put it on the [generic] diagnostics machine but nothing showed up.

I'm leaning towards the 'when you're in a hole stop digging' approach - but if anyone has a quick fix or at least tell me what's happened, it'd be much appreciated. I also tried pressing the setup button for 30 seconds looking for model info but nothing came up.

Best,

Philip

At a guess you still have the original "Columbus" unit which was fitted from new. If so then it's one of the early ones which are rather fragile. Diagnostics probably won't come up with anything as there's nothing the diagnostics are capable of reading once you're into the software. It's possible you can reload the software and save it, but then again it's possible the unit is on its way out.

Does your unit have a small "Speaker and letter i" on the top right hand button, or is it a small microphone?

thanks for getting back Rustynuts  ...it's the model with the button with the speaker and the 'i'. Do you think it was the dodgy maps update CD brought this on or just coincidence?

I think the unit was probably dying and you've just been unlucky. :wondering:
