Broken Power Window Cable

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My drivers side power window has failed. It makes a terrible sound (like the cable spinning sound) when the button is pushed and the window is stuck half way down. I have googled and found that ti almost definately sounds like a broken power window cable. Is this a DIY fix or something best left to the dealer? Sounds expensive fix either way. Might be a good excuse to trade in on a new Kodiak!

Cheers from Aus.

If you search this forum for 'regulator' which is what VAG call the mechanism you will find numerous threads on the subject.

I had the same problem recently and was charged approx £200 notes for them to replace. This was an independent but I felt I was probably over charged.

Mine went about 3 months ago in a very noisy way, it sounded as if a lot of damage was occurring. Lucky that mine was covered under the 5 year warranty.

There is a failure of where the water that comes through from the window finds itself dripping onto the wire spool which gradually washes away the lubricant. This then causes the wire to corrode with the obvious consequences.

UPDATE: Over AU$320 for the part alone from the dealer plus 3 hours labour at AU$100 an hour to fit!! Another Quote from a Euro repairer is 1.5 hours labour at AU$90 per hour but I supply the part from O/S (Potsdam Germany) at AU$80 plus AU$70 postage (and 3 weeks wait!) They were very helpful giving me the details of the part and where to get it from (eBay)...they even tried to source a second hand one but the supplier still wanted AU$300 for it! Still if I think its worth the 3 weeks wait so  I can have it all fixed for around AU$300....half the price from the dealer. Just means I have to hand over the keys to the Octavia to the better half for a while!

Part Number: 3T0837462A
