Buying a Mk2 vrs

Featured Replies

Hello new to this forum just to ask some questions , Ive been considering buying a Fabia vrs 1.4 tsi . Heard a lot about the problems with oil, was wondering if theres a certain age the problem was fixed ? . And also just generally what are they like , mpg around town ? Who's had one for a while what that do you think? .   Thanks

As a rule, i'd buy the newest one that you can. cars after late 2012 should be less likley to develop problems. Engine code you want is CTHE, although some of these have been know to develop some oil consumption issues.

If you see a car you like, get the reg and contact Skoda UK cutomer services and ask about what warranty work has been completed on the car. This will give you an idea as to whether it has had engine problems in the past / consumption tests/fixes applied.

MPG is totally dependent on driving style. Mine averaged  early 30's in town if driven normally. If you like to play traffic light GP's expect high 20's.

Capable little cars, the DSG box is lovley and the seats are some of the best i've ever had! I still miss mine form time to time....

Welcome.

I bumped a thread, and there are the pinned threads at the top of the page, best cram up on what you want to check before buying.

CAVE 2010-2012.  CTHE 2012-2014/15

I have owned a Skoda Fabia VRS (CTHE) for a little over three years.
I have not had any oil consumption issues and I do check regularly - on flat ground, after the car has been idle overnight.
The only problems I have ever experienced have been a couple of occasions where the "Control System for Exhaust" orange light has come on for no obvious reason - the Skoda roadside repair people have never been able to identify a fault.
I have also had issues with incompetent mechanics at two different Skoda Authorised dealers - not noting which spark plug came out of which cylinder despite promising that they would and not knowing what oil they used or even how much - just saying that it would have been the correct type and amount,
I ALWAYS let the oil get up above 50°C indicated before pushing the engine at all and tend to wait for 80°C+ before any determined acceleration.
I tend to drive at around the National Speed Limit unless conditions make it dangerous.
Gearbox is an absolute gem - perhaps the best bit of the car.
The engine is more than adequate for everyday driving, including long runs, it is great for overtaking slow traffic.
Ride is harsh and around town you will feel every pothole but not a problem on Motorways.
Over some 30,000+ miles I have averaged 40.2 MPG (this is a true figure based on mileage covered and litres purchased). On a run down to the shops I will usually see as little as 30 MPG.
I almost always use 97 RON although I have used both Tesco and Shell 99 RON - frankly I have never noticed any difference.

In summary, in my limited experience, a great car - I love it to bits.

SeaGoat, quick question,

is your DSG one that is due the Service Campaign '34H5', a Software Update, have you been contacted or checked?

I've had my cthe 14 plate for just over 3years and it's been fantastic never used a drop of oil always run on Tesco momentum or v-power and it hasent put a foot wrong, so much so I'm thinking of keeping it when my pcp ends in October this year.

Thanks all for the  info :)

I've had my VRS for a week. Love it to bits. A lot of fun to drive. Mpg wise I was getting 40mpg going into work this week. That was me driving sensibly. Today I was thrashing it about and was getting 20 odd. Iv had it at high 40s on long motorway journey also. To Reiterate what was said previously ride can be bumpy. But you'll be having so much fun driving it you won't care.  I bought a cave 2011. Done my homework before buying it and made sure it had all the fixes etc. Breather pipe, and gearbox update etc...  Phone up Skoda with the reg of the car your looking at and they'll tell you what it's had done.only real gripe I have is it sits like it's.on stilts standard and has a bit of body roll when cornering. Planning some lowering springs at some point to remedy that.
