2011 1.4TSI - How long will it last

Hi Everyone.  I've got a 61 plate octavia elegance 1.4tsi.  Had it from new, so it is about 5 and half years old. It has 110k miles on it and is running OK.  I've not had it serviced since about 70k miles (maybe 2 years ago) - but have had the oil changed every so often. 

 

In am currently doing about 20,000 miles a year - the first 90,000 were mainly motorway miles. SInce then I have changed jobs and am driving on A and B roads. Usually in 6th and getting close to 50mpg. 

 

I'm tempted to change it - but admittedly only because I'm bored of it - and I quite like the look of the Kodiaq(!) - 

 

It is worth more to me than it's monetary value - I think it cost about £15k at the time and worth less than £5k now.. so keeping it a little longer (maybe another year or three) wont make much difference in terms of a trade in price to me. 

 

it hasn't put a foot wrong since I have had it.  

 

Would you keep it?  Is it likely to last another 3 years - it would have 170k miles on it by then.  What is likely to go wrong with it?  It has had no work to it other than 3 major services - the last one I think included spark plugs.

Hi Charlie, got the same car and year and recently had a quote from Arnold Clarke to exchange it. Mine as just under 60,000 miles on the clock and all they quoted me was £2500 which I thought was ridiculous. I decided to keep mine and run it into the ground.

As for how long will yours last ............ How long is a piece of string? If it aint broke don't fix it is a saying I swear by. Keep doing regular oil and filter changes and get your full monies  worth from it before investing in your next car.

Did it ever have any replacement brake discs when it was being fully serviced? If not, you're likely to hit MOT failure condition of these pretty soon. Beyond the oil change, most of the 'full service' is just looking at stuff to see if it needs replacing rather than much actual preventive maintenance.

On my wife's previous car (MK1 Octavia) which we ran to about 150k, the following failed or needed replacing between 100k and 150k miles:

Brake discs and pads (consumables really)

Tyres (again consumable)

Front spring

Starter motor

Plug leads and coil pack

Lambda sensor (which I didn't replace as it still passed the emissions part of the MOT and ran fine)

 

None of the repairs cost more than about £250 at our local independent VW specialist, and we only really got rid of the car in the end because my wife wanted to drive around in something newer.

Thanks for the responses Maverick/Ian.  I think you have both convinced me to keep it till it's dead.. 

 

I'm not going to get much for it - and depreciation will be minimal now. 

 

I had the brake pads and discs changed a few months ago - Other than that - It has just been tyres. 

 

I'll keep the oil changed regularly and see if I can get to 180k miles!!

 

Who here has the 1.4 TSI with the most miles on it?

 

 

Just watch out for timing chain rattle as any tensioner issues or stretched chain can easily kill the engine.

too be fair I think you've answered your own questions

they car has already done its major depreciation curve and it sounds like it's done you proud so all good in that respect, you now have to decide if you want to loss the equivalent again over the next 10 years or gamble the year in year out running cost are lower than the equivilant ' new ' car depreciation ( essentially heads you win tails you don't ) 

I'd feel uneasy running a new or nearly new car without regular servicing but an oil and filter change say every 6 months and a picky mot examiner ought to give a few more years in a ' known ' car

so if it still suits your needs run it until it starts to empty your back pocket
