Startup 'throaty' sound

Featured Replies

Hi all.

March 2015 Octavia 1.4 TSI DSG.

I have attached a recording of a cold start of my car. This 'throaty' sound lasts for approx. thirty seconds and then engine returns to normal. This sometimes happens twice a day after the car has been standing for a while, sometimes not at all, or first thing in the morning, but is getting progressively more often. Started as happening say once a month over the past six months.

The 15-7.mp3 is when it is at its worst.

The 17-7.mp3.....is a putting noise when the revs decline..

15-07.mp3

17-7.mp3

throaty2.mp3

Any ideas please anyone?

Cheers

Tony.

That's from the outside with the bonnet open? My car also sounded similarly throaty when someone else manoeuvred it near me. I'm ok with that.

I'm just glad each time my vehicles start and run.

I'm no Techy, but it could be the Turbo, Catalytic convertor or a sticking pump not releasing until thirty seconds or so following a start after several hours.

The recordings were taken from the drivers seat with the door open and a microphone held just under the body.

Best listened to with head phones.

Update:

Noticed this past week that when the noise as in the 'throaty2' recording occurs upon start, the throatiness only lasts until the revs drop to the normal 750-800rpm ie: idle drops from just over 1000rpm when choke is in operation.

Also, during that thirty seconds or so, the car's DSG does not engage gear correctly. ie: low grinding noise.

Switching the engine off during the initial thirty seconds or so and then restarting car, it runs as normal.

I just wait the thirty seconds or so now before pulling off.

Took to Skoda garage last week, and they said the recordings sounded normal Turbo westgate noise. No diagnostic errors showing.

Car now 2.5 years old...It is not normal as far as my car is concerned, so will now have to insist on a diagnosis.

Help from you guys would be very welcome.

Cheers

Tony

These engines are a bit noisy at start up, when on cold start 'choke', but as long as it drives normally, returns the usual mpg and doesn't burn oil, I would not worry about it.

Also have a search on you tube, there are videos of similar noises for the 1.2 and 1.4 TSi. Don't get confused with the earlier 1.4 TSi videos of rattling timing chains, as our engines are belt drive.

Thanks Glosrich

I dont mind the noise. My concern is when I attempt to pull off in 1st gear and the gearbox does not engage the gear correctly (grinding). After the starting revs drop to normal ~750rpm (about 30-40 secs) then all is fine.
